The trouble with some film novelisations is that they act merely as an extension of the film merchandise (cough cough van helsing cough) but, concerning this novelistion, this is not the case.
Even though it is based on the screenplay of the film, this is really a stand alone book, and Greg Cox is a fantastic writer, brnging the Underworld to life so fluently.
This book also includes the scenes/lines/events that were cut from the film for time reasons, and they add wonders to the already brilliant story.
I loved the way that Cox gave each of the characters, no matter how minor, a memorable personality. For example, Nathaniel and Rigel. Who? You might think, but after reading the novelisation of the film you will certainly remember them more easily!
I would recommend this book to any Underworld fan, I certainly enjoyed it, and it is a decent length too so It should keep you busy!

Absolutely top-rate novelisation. There were a couple of annoying continuity errors - getting people's eye colour wrong, giving Michael Corvin's former girlfriend 2 different names - but other than that, nothing to criticise. The film rocked, and so did the book. It filled in a lot of backstory that was very helpful. Selene and Michael's attraction for each other - criticised as seemingly coming from nowhere in the film - is explored much more in the book. They are both characters we can feel an affinity with. Michael's intense vulnerability is explored in much greater depth (one hopes the dvd would have the reason he's so far from home in the first place as one of the deleted scenes, it was really quite moving). His importance to the future of the lycans is perhaps better explained in the film, but the book explains his past better. The other characters are also much more rounded, including a couple that barely speak in the film - Amelia, Soren, Kahn and Erika (who should be given a much bigger role in the sequel, she was an absolute joy to watch/read!).
And as for Selene - excellent characterisation. She wasn't as cold and inhuman as she seems to be in the film. Like Michael, she's struggling with traumatic events in her past that are further developed in the book. Viktor, Lucian and Kraven also had useful extra information.
Watch the film then read the book. It's worth your while. Its just like seeing the film all over again!

Vampire soldiers v Werewolves is a horror story that cant go wrong. The novelization of the film was brilliant. We see the Werewolf leader trying to end the reign of vampire terror once and for all, but the the 'civilized' vamps have other ideas. Their top hunter A vampiress called Selene (reminisent of Clarrisa from Lucifer Wars by stuart vowell) is given the task of eliminating the werewolves, but she falls for the human that holds the key to the heirachy of the werewolf and vampire heritage. Lots of bloodshed and lots of gun play, the action explodes from the pages just as well as it did from the screen. There is nothing lost and indeed there is something gained as you get an insight into the actual feelings of the central characters that a film cannot always capture.
If you loved the film then you will love the book.

Excellent!!!
What more can I say?
If like me you've been to see the film and enjoyed it you will love this book. The transition to novelization has been well done by the author.
This book provides what many books do to many films and adds the Characters thoughts you get a real feeling for each individual character you will either love them or hate them.
I would highly recommend this book whether you have seen the film or not it describes fully the Lycan and Vampire war that has raged for over nine hundred years in secrecy hidden from the world.
As you read further into this book you will be gripped and left in suspense eager to know what the result in the war will be Lyacn or Vampire.
Its time to decide, enjoy!

Underworld is sleek and beautifly made film, book is as good as film, and even more info, kind of "deleted scenes":) Of intimacy between Erika and Kraven.
I love Selene, she's perfect model of modern vampire, and her outfits, oooooh!!! She's hot!!! It is kind of Romeo and Juliette story... All film is packed with action, as well as story, and history, how the war between 2 immortal species started, I LOVE IT!!!
