Given the very many real challenges that underwater photography poses, it would have been so easy for this subject to be treated in a dry, technical, frankly uninspiring manner. What elevates this book is the fundamental desire of the author to teach the reader not just how to take good photos underwater, but how to take great photos.
This is where the Art comes in. For the pages of the book are illustrated by hundreds of outstanding images, each with full camera setting information, demonstrating, in practice, how to achieve the best in difficult lighting conditions, with challenging subjects and getting the most from the equipment available. The commentary on these photos reveals the huge depth of knowledge, passion and enthusiasm that the author has for his subject.
The sheer variety of images is quite breath-taking: from curious manatees and playful seal pups through to glorious black-tipped sharks and schooling baitballs of sardine harried by porpoises. We see the underwater world at every scale: from tiny zooplankton, shrimps, seahorses and blennies, thought to the giants of the seas, humpback whales and basking sharks. Golden retrievers, male models and sunken battleships also make an appearance!
These images are intended to do more than inspire and enthuse the budding underwater photographer, although they do that very well indeed. In fact they are all very carefully selected to complement the text and reinforce the key learning points Nick Robertson-Brown is sharing with the reader.Read more ›
Even the technical section is easy to read and understand!
Also full of fantastic photos that show what you can achieve underwater.
Lighting and refraction are well explained as well. I love sharks and I was pleased to see his comments at the end of the book on how misunderstood and wonderful these creatures are. A must buy book for anyone interested in underwater photography.
