One of the most respected names in the biz -- Plotz Funeral Homes -- is directed by Boris Plotz (Alfred Molina), whose youthful dreams consisted of two decidedly cheerier concepts than the embalming process: dancing and marrying his childhood crush, Betty Rhys-Jones (Brenda Blethyn). Unfortunately, the pressure to take over the family business became too much for Boris to resist, particularly after Betty, despite being secretly in love with Boris, was married off to a known gold digger. Both Betty and Boris' lives remain firmly status quo until the death of Betty's mother-in-law, whose funeral arrangements throw the unsatisfied couple back together. While the spark between Betty and Boris is reignited, rival funeral director Frank Featherbed (Christopher Walken) grows increasingly angry; the American funeral director desperately wants to revolutionize the U.K. undertaking business with his unique "theme" funerals. Ultimately, Boris and Betty resort to desperate measures -- since the only thing keeping him away from Betty is her two-timing husband, they decide to stage Betty's demise and elope somewhere far away from the death business.

I watched this film two years ago on a flight and have been looking for it ever since. It is a wonderful, exceedingly funny love story with some great characters, Alfred Molina and Brenda Blethyn are particulary good as the two main characters and star crossed lovers. A five star plus film and worth waiting for.

While on holiday abroad, I came across this film on a foreign TV channel- I hoped it would have subtitles, but sadly it was dubbed. However, I persevered for several minutes and realised it was a extremely funny film with an excellent cast! I expected to be able to buy it on the internet or in any decent music store, but it was unavailable, + eventually I bought it from Holland (with removeable Dutch subtitles) on Ebay! This is a hilarious film, with a very different storyline, which interweaves traditional romance with black humour, + the cast are superb, especially Brenda Blethyn + Alfred Molina! Considering the number of titles which are available to purchase- many of them inferior to this comedy- it is a mystery why (1) this film is not readily available in the UK + (2) why it is not better known!! I recommend it to one + all- watch it, have a good laugh + discover this gem of a film!!

I first saw this film on a bus trip - in Spanish with subtitles - and really enjoyed it. I looked for this in Spain and UK under the Title 'Plots with a view' and ended up buying this Dutch version which plays in English. The only drawback is my wife is hard of hearing and the subtitles are only available in Dutch. I enjoyed watching this in English with my grandson even though my wife struggled to hear the dialogue. This is a love story with a difference, set in a fictional Welsh village it centres on the relationships between the rival funeral directors, the local councillor, his wife and his secretary. Recommended to anyone with good hearing. Gentle humour with a great cast and music from the golden age of musicals.

Humour from the grave?
I watched this movie first on Swedish television, and from only half way through. I laughed till I couldn't breathe. British humour at its best in my opinion. Read more
