Review

Paula Hall has tackled the oft dismissed issue of sexual addiction by packing this text with clear insight, compassion and solid clinical knowledge. It is a must have for anyone wishing to truly understand the diagnosis, and treatment of sexual addiction. - Robert Weiss LCSW, CSAT-S, Founding Director of the Sexual Recovery Institute and Author of Cruise Control

This book is a competent and intelligent exposition of the subject of sexual addiction, suitable for general readers and essential for clinicians. Written from a British perspective , it will be of considerable interest to a wider reading public. Paula Hall is a fresh voice with stimulating insights. - Dr Thaddeus Birchard, Clinical Director, The Marylebone Centre

"This book is important as a first publication from a UK perspective. Its strength is in its structure and organisation and in the journalistic, not academic, language; these make the book accessible to both the professional and the layman. Her language is intelligent, the bibliography is wide-ranging, and the list of resources is an important appendix." - Sandra Buchanan, Addiction Recovery Foundation (May/June 2013)

"A book to quell the skeptics and provide education, assessment tools, treatment options, and most importantly, hope, for both health-care providers and individuals struggling with a sex addiction." - Elsie Hall, Womens Mental Health

As a therapist in this field I found this book a valuable tool. It is well researched and deals with what can be a controversial subject in a clear non judgmental way which is going to be helpful to therapists and clients. The author knows her subject well and her experience comes through. This book offers hope to people who may be in despair.

A very non biased book giving excellent information while totally non judgemental. Read in conjunction with You Tube: Your Brain on Porn Addiction (6 parts) plus the book 'Mending a Shattered Heart'. I now have a comprehensive understanding of the condition. AND I think it is all helping

I am a therapist working with addiction and I found this a useful and comprehensive resource. The book outlines the different underlying factors that can take a client down the road to addiction. It also addresses the current situation where the sheer availability and quantity of porn that be accessed through the internet means that sex addiction can become a problem where no previous risk factors are present. The book outlines the neuroscience behind addiction. I would recommend this for anyone working in this area but also for those counsellors who aren't and may overlook when addiction is causing a problem in other areas of a clients life.

A helpful overview of the topic of sex addiction. The author writes in a compassionate and understanding way - not judgmental at all. I find this very helpful - and she understands that there are people who find the term 'sex addiction' unhelpful and even judgmental: but she tackles this head-on, and makes the point that if a behaviour is harming the quality of someone's life, then it's a problem, whether you call it addiction, sexual compulsivity, or prefer to use some other term.

Particularly helpful is the way that the author separates the 'addiction' from 'sex' and helps us to understand that 'sex addiction' is not about bad morals, but that people often confuse the 'sex' bit as being about high sex-drive or an inability to control lust. Instead, she makes clear that sex is just like any other addictive possiblity, whether alcohol, tobacco, drugs... and that the addiction needs to be dealt with at several different levels.

I think any therapist will find this a useful book to have read and to keep on their bookshelf: more and more clients are presenting with issues of sex addiction, and it behoves us all to stay abreast of lastest thinking on the subject.

I needed to understand this area quickly as a (male) friend of mine has gotten into some difficulty and we, his friends, could not understand what was going on. This book, written in a very practical and instructive manner, has brought us up to speed very quickly on a topic about which we knew very little. A very good reference book for ongoing use.
