Product Description

Review
"The great strenth of the book is in its clear and detailed clinical descriptions of the psychoanalytic method as it can be applied in an NHS setting and its demonstration of thesubtlety and complexity of the different authors bring to their work."
-"Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy
"All the papers are stimulating and thought-provoking, although from a clinical point of view the section on therapy with trauma survivors will probably prove most useful. This book is highly recommended."

5.0 out of 5 stars Well documented and thought provoking review of trauma, 23 Sep 1999
By Mr. Lawrence A. Suss "Loz" (Brighton, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book stands as a real contrast to the books that treat trauma from a cognitive or CBT perspective. The authors, staff at the Tavistock Clinic (itself founded to deal with trauma) approach the subject from a psychoanalytic perspective, mainly that of Melanie Klein, and explore the impact of the trauma on the patient's inner world and object relations. Evidence of the trauma as it appears in the transference (and so the relationship between therapist and patient)is addressed and interpreted rather than the usual debriefing methods advocated by CBT therapists. It is suggested that CBT methods run the risk of re-traumatising the patient by not giving sufficient weight to the effects of asking the patient to go over the trauma in detail (in effect, they suggest that such techniques could be seen as bullying and so traumatic).

The book initially considers those patients who place themsleves at risk of trauma (e.g. by participating in risky sports) but then goes on to deal with traumas that have caught the headlines in recent years: Zeebrugger, Kings Cross etc. Part of the strength of the book is that it provides detailed accounts of clinical work allowing the reader to make up their own mind about what is said in the therapy.

I feel the only draw back is that it is written soley from a Kleinian perspective, but this is only a small blemish when compared with the quality of the writing.
