The Long Yang Form. Including 'The Magic Bird Spreads Its Wings', a programme by Norwegian Television. In this video Gerda Geddes demonstrates the Chinese Art of T'ai Chi Ch'uan Long Yang Form. T'ai Chi Ch'uan is an ancient Chinese movement ritual and the gentleness of its movements make it beneficial for both young and old alike. Its aim is to promote harmony between the Spirit and a healthy body. Gerda Geddes spent her childhood and youth in Norway. She studied Psychology in America and completed a Reichian Training Analysis in Oslo as well as a four year modern dance course. She taught dance and stage movement at the Norwegian National Theatre and in 1949 she went to China and lived for ten years in the Far East where she studied T'ai Chi Ch'uan with Master Choy Kam-Man, an internationally recognised teacher. A film has been made of her life and work by Norwegian Television that is also included on this video. She is the author of the book 'Looking for the Golden Needle' - an allegorical journey.

Although the image is jumping a few times and you should focus on the movements as seen in the mirror, it is a good addition for people learning Tai Chi Chuan - Yang Long Form. It should only be used as a guide and not attempt to learn Tai Chi from it. Good reminder when you practice at home after a lesson.

The careful demonstration, by Gerda Geddes of the postures (reflected in a wall mirror) of the Long Form with her voice over instructions, gives the student a direct the way to progress through and learn the form. An excellent method to aid the student. One is in the actual class. There are no unnecessary words. Just direct communication. The DVD includes "The Magic Bird Spreads Its Wings" which tells of her early life and the 40 years learning and teaching T'ai-Chi Ch'an .We see her performing the Form in a Park alone with the passing strollers watching or moving by. Over many years she has express her aim to promote harmony between the Spirit and a fit healthy body . I had her Videos- T'ai Chi Fitness for Life and Tai Chi Chuan Long Yang Form - , I am delighted to have both on one DVD. Also I have since 1993, her book "Looking for The Golden Needle an allegorical journey" dedicated to her teacher Choy Kam-man. There are now many Martial Art, Qi Gong etc.DVD's and books available, Gerda Geddes is a most respected instructor who has inspired many to practise and continue to do so for their life's benefit and for the benefit of others.

This is in fact two films on one DVD. The mirror image demonstration technique takes some getting used to and the camera work could have been a bit more professional (it was shot in 1982, I believe!) The second film, "The Magic Bird Spreads its Wings" was interesting, and I especially enjoyed the insight into the symbolism of Tai Chi Chuan postures. Over all a good addition to a personal Tai Chi library.

DVD was good but I felt that it needed more detail explaining the movements. I didnt think Gerda's movements were expressive enough - possibly due to her age when making the DVD. I purchased it because I thought it would be more explicit but was a little disappointed.
