More About the Author

Throughout my life I have kept and worked with a broad range of animals (including several dogs!) and also had my own successful pet sitting business. I have qualifications in animal care and management, and have also completed my OCN on the Sheila Harper IDBTS course.

I am the proud owner of Pogo, a rescue crossbreed from the Border Collie Trust; and Hagrid, a rescued English mastiff who was in very poor health, nervous and would have been perceived as a potentially dangerous dog. They have taught me so much -- as have all my dogs -- and now I am able to help them have a better life due to what I have learnt from the IDBTS course and working with Sheila Harper Ltd. I only wish I knew 20 years ago what I know now.

Having had previous experience of many different types of training and behavioural methods -- most of which relied on exercising some form of dominance or control over the dog -- I realised that, at best, they produced only short-term results, but more usually made matters worse.

After attending further courses run by Sheila and other similarly enlightened people, I am now able to use my knowledge, qualifications and experience to help people to understand their dogs, work with them to develop a positive relationship, deal with existing issues and prevent problems developing.

"A good relationship that works is about understanding, sharing and trust. With this dual relationship it lays down a solid foundation for the partnership to flourish and encourages problems to dissipate"

Review

Why do I feel this book is so important? At its core it contains valuable information for each one of us, including the dog, and even increases our understanding of other species. Rosie guides the reader towards knowledge that will help unlock the door to better observation and understanding of the REAL canine world, rather than one which tends to come from interpretation as opposed to observation. Rosie has studied widely, reading literature, attending courses and learning from humans, and more importantly, learning from the animals themselves. By putting theories into practice and testing her beliefs, she has gained a deep appreciation of which are of value and which can be discarded. Her down-to-earth approach is an asset that she brings to every aspect of her daily life. She gives the reader ideas of how to make changes, how to work and how to help dogs along with reasons behind those suggestions. The benefits of her approach are verified by outright success --Sheila Harper B.Ed BA- Principal International Dog Behaviour and Training School.

This is a long awaited book. So many dog behaviourists and trainers are using outdated methods. I recommend this book to all dog owners and anyone who is thinking of getting a dog. Rosie has written this book in such a down to earth way with brilliant photos and easy to understand text. Using Rosie's approach will enable dog owners to build a close relationship with their dogs. Dogs are so misunderstood and Rosie shows how important it is for us to observe their behaviour and communicate with them. Dogs try so hard to communicate with humans when they are put in situations where they are not coping but this so overlooked by dog owners. Rosie explains how owners can recognise when their dog is not coping and how to deal with these situations.
I wish this book had been available when I got my dog four years ago. I tried all the outdated methods dog trainers/behaviourists recommended to me but ended up with a dog more stressed and unable to cope with daily family life. I am now beginning to understand the dogs that I meet when I am out and about. It is so sad to see so many dogs not coping in the situations their owners are putting them. I hope anyone who has any interest in dogs will buy Rosie's book and will learn how to really understand dogs.

A very well presented and quality book that I would recommend to any conscientious dog owner. As a human there is so much we mis-interpret in our dogs behaviour and this book explains in clear, simple English how we can learn to understand our pets better for the benefit of both. So often we are way off what our dog is trying to communicate to us and this causes frustration on both sides. I have started to use some of the techniques learnt in the book and I am already seeing a difference with my dog. It is especially important to pick up on the signals when your dog is stressed and do you best to minimise their discomfort. This is something I was particularly bad at untill I read this book.

So to conclude I would definately recommend this book to anyone wanting to improve the quality of their dogs life and your relationship with them. 5*

This is an excellent, well written book that inspires us to observe and understand our dogs and to encourage them to be dogs and display their natural doggie behaviours. The book is a must read for every dog owner to inform them that there is more to our dogs than just control and tricks. Through her own knowledge and experience and years of helping us dog owners with problem dogs, she's managed to give us an insight into what makes a dog tick and to inform and encourage us to listen to our dogs and enjoy them for the wonderful companions they are. It's the best dog book I've read in years and I encourage all my Canine Behaviour clients and attendees of my Canine Coaching Classes to read this much needed book.

I bought this book midlle of December 2011 and read it twice from cover to cover the day I received it! I have lived with dogs all of my adult life (and I am quite a mature lady now!) and like many of us I recognise the many mistakes I have made with many of these wonderful companions over the years. Always with the best of intentions of course and in line with much of the expert opinions relevant at these times.
However, this refreshing book invites the reader to explore a new way to live with our dogs, invites us to share in the Author's "phillosphy" and a new way of life with mutual respect and understanding. I would like to condence the book into a pocket sized format so that I can always have it with me when out and about and identify his body language if he is presenting with something new! but then I would miss the wonderful cover! So, insted, I shall re read this book often and am sure my dog is happy I that I have read it.

Once I has downloaded this book I read it from cover to cover. It made me understand so much more about my own dogs and I now try to put Rosie's ideas into practice. It really is an eye-opener. Every dog owner should read this.

This is a GREAT book, with lots of photographs and clear explanations of what our dogs are - it is an easy read.

It covers how to improve our day to day relationship without "controlling" our dogs' every move. It helps the reader understand the dog's body language and calming signals as well as showing what stresses our dogs and why.

As a Dog Listener/Canine Consultant based in Belgium, this is the book I have been "waiting" for (hoping the French translation will come soon) to recommend to my clients, as it is full of good examples of every-day life, in which Rosie demonstrates how easily misunderstandings between our dogs and us can occur and how with some simple changes in our behaviour, we can make things so much easier and better for them (and therefore us as well).

Buy it - you will not be able to put it down and your dog will thank you.

With books like this and open-minded dog owners, dogs can look forward to a happier life!
A must-read for every person with a dog, wanting a dog or working with dogs!
The modern dog behaviourist will find his views confirmed and many, many examples that he can use during his consults. The more traditional dog behaviourist will be shown new ideas and methods beyond control and obedience. Dog owners are encouraged to learn to communicate with their dogs and strengthen their relationships.
As veterinary surgeon as well as professional dog behaviourist & trainer, I recommend this book to all my clients.
Rather than humanising dogs, this book encourages the reader to take a step out of our human world into the dog's world and to experience daily situations from the dog's point of view.
With simple, yet effective examples of every-day life, the author demonstrates how misunderstandings between dog and owner occur and how we can make things easier and better for our dogs with some simple changes, empathy and a bit more consideration.
We tend to control every aspect of our dogs lifes.
The author shows how to give some control back to the dog within boundaries, to allow the dog to develop his own ability to make good and confident choices, to provide socialisation at our dog's pace rather than ours and to appreciate how our life style is influencing not just our but also our dog's health and well-being.
Read this book ... your dog deserves it!
