Product Description

Review

'This book is eminently suitable for students undertaking a first course in probability. It would be particularly useful for service teaching where students are not aiming for a degree classification in mathematics or statistics.' Significance

'This book gives an introduction to probability theory by using motivating examples to illustrate the concepts.' Monatshefte für Mathematik

'The book is written in a narrative yet precise style which makes it enjoyable to read. It is well suited for first courses in probability for students of engineering or computer science. It may also be used as additional material in other courses or for self-study.' Zentralblatt MATH

Product Description

In this fully revised second edition of Understanding Probability, the reader can learn about the world of probability in an informal way. The author demystifies the law of large numbers, betting systems, random walks, the bootstrap, rare events, the central limit theorem, the Bayesian approach and more. This second edition has wider coverage, more explanations and examples and exercises, and a new chapter introducing Markov chains, making it a great choice for a first probability course. But its easy-going style makes it just as valuable if you want to learn about the subject on your own, and high school algebra is really all the mathematical background you need.

This is a strange book.It contains plenty of errors,is not an easy read and yet it is compelling. It is difficult to leave alone, seriously it is.It comes as a surprise to me that none of the other reviewers makes mention of any errors, for errors there are in abundance. But dont let that put you off, dont let the fact that solutions are only given to half the problems put you off either. You can find the answers easily enough on the internet Q/A sites.Dont be put off by the need for computer simulation ,for hidden away in the introduction is an email address and there you can download free software to help you through. You might not get through the complete text if you have no knowledge of calculus or algebra but you can get most of the way through it with very little maths. However if you have no prior experience of the subject then may I suggest you invest in Probability Demystified as well as Mr Tijms book.Have fun.

The back cover claims "high school algebra is really all the mathematical background you need". I can tell you now that if you do not know some calculus you will be adrift for a not insubstantial part of the book dealing with probability density functions. I picked this up on a whim and rushed through it but my impression is that the author's approachable style will appeal to many. Don't let that "style" fool you though as there is a lot here and you will need your math chops and enthusiasm to get through.

This book deals with the theory of probability in great depth, and if you want to study probability with conjecture to measure theory then definitely this is the best book.
