Review

This is a brilliant book, I am already feeling better knowing that I am not the only person who is suffering from panic attacks. The author has extensive experiences in 'treating' patients with panic attacks and there are both medical and psychological explanation in the book. All symptoms of panic attacks are described explicitly. I can't recommend highly enough of this book. Buy this if you have had any experiences of panic attacks, this really helps!! Several weeks before the birth of our baby boy i suffered from my first panic attack, at the time i thought i was having a heart attack, which scared the living daylights out of me. A trip to A & E to check out my health eased my nerves when they reported that i was more than healthy. I visited the doctor who explained i exhibited all the symptoms of a panic attack and anxiety, which came as a shock as i hadn't thought i was particularly stressed about anything. The doctor explained that it may have been caused by worry about the imminent arrival of the baby... this made perfect sense. He added that the panicky feelings may subside after the birth. Unfortunately, although i did not have a full blown attack as before i continued to exhibit all the signs of panic and anxiety. This is when i got worried, fearing that i would have another attack and continue to have symptoms for an extended period. Reading Dr Roger Baker's book has virtually rid me of any of these feelings, as he says knowledge is key in understanding the attacks and helping to reduce and finally eliminate the symptoms. I would recommend this book to anyone suffering from panic attacks and anxiety. If you suffer from panic attacks you must get this book. I had a terrible time with panic attacks that totally ruined my life. I had severe panic attacks for five years and did not understand what was happening to me and woke up most mornings just wishing they would go away. The day someone gave me Roger Bakers book on Understanding Panic Attacks and Overcoming Fear, was the first time in years that I felt a sense of release. It reassured me I was not going crazy and that panic was a thing that can and could happen to the strongest of people. I had just created a big fear of them and in turn over the years, made myself worse. When I started on the book it took me a bit of time to do as he said, probably as I think at first when you start taking into action what Roger Baker tells you, in the book you are a little wary. You even convince yourself that it could not possibly work for you, and I was also very, very scared of panic. The thought of going into a situation where they are sure to come on and to let them come, was very hard for me. Eventually I followed the book and found his methods to work very well and might I add it was very easy to follow. Over time I now live free of panic and it is the best thing ever. When I say free of panic, I may get the odd panicky feeling about twice a year or so. Thanks to Roger Baker I fear them no more so it's just uncomfortable like getting a headache, but I go on as normal and it soon passes. This is a great book and Roger Baker is an amazing man that helped me to change my life and now I can live a happy life again. God bless Roger Baker and anyone that has to go through the same journey as I did. Undoubtedly the most important book I have ever read. After 10 years of totally debilitating, often more than daily, panic attacks leading to agoraphobia, a friend handed me this book. I did follow it to the tee and put in a lot of hard work and within months my attacks had stopped altogether (I did see an immediate decrease in regularity just from reading the book!) No attacks in 8 years and I am now reclaiming the life I could have had. I have bought copies of this book now for 6 friends/friends of friends and every single one has overcome their panic attacks. How I wish Roger Baker had started his study into panic attacks and, therefore, got this book out earlier! Literally a life-changing book. I was totally bewildered when I had my first panic attack on an aeroplane in Dec 2002. I scoured the Internet for advice but found nothing that seemed to work. I came across "Understanding Panic Attacks and Overcoming Fear" a month or so ago and found that this book was describing everything that I'd experienced and answered many of the questions I'd been searching for. I had been prescribed anti-depressants for the panic attacks. This book has given me the confidence to come off the medication (gradually!!!) and try some of the "personal experiments" Dr Roger Baker suggests. I thoroughly recommend "Understanding Panic Attacks and Overcoming Fear". I can honestly say that it has changed my life!!

Like nearly every other sufferer, panic struck and I had no clue why. I am 21, was about to return for my final year at university after a long summer off and was generally feeling good about my life. Good family, good friends, everything was fine. I was however already on the drug prozac, which I blamed for masked happiness. The drug also had side effects of anxiety and in rare cases, panic attacks.

I developed a fear of medication, or any thing that would mess with my already messed up brain. Im sure other panic sufferers will understand what I mean when I say that you want to be in the most normal state of mind when it strikes. I was terrified to even go out drinking with my friends. I stopped drinking coffee, I stopped everything that made me happy. I felt so trapped because I wanted to deal with it naturally, but at the same time the effects were so utterly horrible I just wanted it to go away. Panic physically drains your life and your mind, and the doom that overtakes all happiness you ever had is just so unfair. I didn't want to let anyone down and knowing I had to deal with this before university started again was added pressure.

I was lucky enough to have an extremely supportive Dad who had beaten panic attacks and as much as I tried to listen to his words, and although they helped, I needed more.

This book is amazing. I read it in two days because I just could not put it down. I thought the mention or thought of panic would inevitably spark one but that is not true. I truely believe that if you know every in and out of what is actually happening to your body when a panic attack occurs, you are half way there. This book gives you every possible understanding you could ever need. I think the turning point for me, was reading that panic attacks were merely an accidental triggering of the body's fear reaction - designed to protect you in dangerous situations. So why would a bodily mechanism designed to protect you, kill you?

Of course, I am not saying everyone should remember this and be cured instantly. The severity and effects of attacks vary depending on person - but this book covers every possible effect, every possible trigger. It is cognitive behavioural therapy - just without a person telling you what you should do. I advise any one that feels lost, alone, terrified, horrible and completely worn out to get this book. You will NOT regret it.

I am not there yet, but i'm well on my way. I only wish I could meet the author to give him the biggest hug ever. If he only knew how many people he had helped and provided a light at the darkest hour.

I had suffered with panic attacks for 6 months and I thought i was going mad, But with the help of this book it helped me learn to understand what was happening to me and helped me to start overcoming the fear of going out the house. Even now in a bad patch i still refer to the book and would recommend this book to any one who wants to understand and start to overcome panic attacks

It took 10 years of suffering from (more than daily) panic attacks for a family friend to find out what was happening to me and give me this book (which she had used herself). By this time I was close to totally agoraphobic. Boy did reading this book turn my life around. GPs had tried all sorts of meds but there wasn't the understanding of panic attacks back then that there is now, and Roger Baker is the man to thank for how things have changed.

If anyone ever told me that a book was all I needed I would have laughed in their face, but reading this book and understanding every aspect of my body's behaviour and how it was supposed to help me (in an entirely different situation) was enough for me to get back to full health. I'm not saying it's easy, doing CBT on yourself never is, and I would always advise having a good friend or two to back you up, but it works.

If you suffer from panic attacks buy this book. I have now handed out 7 copies of this book (my own copy which I then replace) and now I have learned to keep a couple spare. Nipping panic attacks in the bud is key to not losing 10 years of your life (as I did) and if I had enough money to buy a copy for every sufferer I would, rather than have them go deep into the world of panic attacks.
