Product Description

Product Description

"Lively and engaging, Understanding Homicide impressively fills an important gap in the current criminological literature... an authoritative and readable text on homicide."

Keith Soothill, Lancaster University, UK

Why do people kill?

How is homicide investigated?

What are the patterns and characteristics of UK homicide?

How can it be prevented?

Here is a comprehensive and challenging text unravelling the phenomenon of homicide.

The author combines original analysis with a lucid overview of the key theories and debates in the study of homicide and violence. In introducing the broad spectrum of different features, aspects and forms of homicide, Brookman examines its patterns and trends, how it may be explained, its investigation and how it may be prevented.

Areas covered include:

· the killing of children

· multiple homicide (including serial and mass murder, terrorism and corporate homicide)

· domestic homicide

· female killers

· homicide amongst men

The book is unique in its focus, coverage and style and bridges a major gap in criminological literature. Whilst focused in several respects upon the UK experience of homicide, the text necessarily draws upon and makes a significant contribution to international literature, research and debate.

The text has been written in a style that will be accessible to a wide audience and assumes no prior knowledge. Features to aide the student include study tasks, review questions and annotated suggested further reading, including internet resources.

Understanding Homicide is ideal for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the fields of criminology, criminal justice, psychology, sociology and forensics. It will also be invaluable to academics, researchers and practitioners interested in the phenomenon of homicide and the broader issue of violence.

In writing this book Fiona Brookman has brought together much of the work available on homicide, including her own research and produced a book which should be considered a key text for anyone studying homicide or any of the connected issues ( domestic violence, rape, child abuse etc)
The information is presented clearly throughout the book with sufficient detail and reference made to real cases which are effectively used to illustrate the themes and theories discussed.Study tasks are provided to aid revision and understanding of the previous chapters.
The language used is clear, sometimes complex issues and arguments are explained effectively and the book is written in a very readable manner, unlike some textbooks in which you can feel like you are fighting your way through academic waffle. It is also easy to locate the information you need and dip in and out of the book thanks to very clear chapters and effective referencing.
I have to say in three years at university this is the best textbook I have read.

I recently purchased this book after cracking open my ceramic pig-shaped money box to cash in my life-savings, along with the family jewels. One swift delivery later and my daughter reckons it's a really good book, cleverly written in an easily understandable fashion. High praise indeed then and richly deserved no doubt so that's that then, it's all good? Well, no, not quite because somewhere amidst the kudos and bubbles there is a disappointing footnote to add and it goes like this: Despite the fact that I cashed in the children's inheritance to buy Fiona's wonderful book, she still won't add me on facebook.

This is the best book in the world ever - if that doesn't make Fiona feel obliged to make sure I pass my homicide and violence course nothing will!
