Book Description

Understanding Environmental Pollution systematically introduces pollution issues to students and others with little scientific background. The first edition received excellent reviews, and the new edition has been completely refined and updated. The book moves from the definition of pollution and how pollutants behave, to air and water pollution basics, pollution and global change, solid waste, and pollution in the home. It also discusses persistent and bioaccumulative chemicals, and pesticides, and it places greater stress on global pollutants. The relationship between energy generation and use, and pollution is stressed, as well as the importance of going beyond pollution control, to pollution prevention. Impacts on human and environmental health are emphasized throughout. Students are often invited to come to their own conclusions after having been presented with a variety of opinions. This textbook provides the basic concepts of pollution, toxicology and risk assessment for non-science majors as well as environmental science students.

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointed 10 Mar 2010
By kimba21
Format:Paperback
On the positive side this book is a comprehensive book presenting an introduction into all important aspects of environmental pollution. On the negative side the text presents many facts in form of anecdotal evidence and through quoting personal statements from fellow academics, however without sufficiently backing up these very statements with figures or other evidence. A table or figure confirming through numerical values from peer-reviewed literature the assessed impact of a certain type of pollution, for instance, carries more weight than a quoted personal statement from an academic, who is unknown to me. A further drawback of the book is the exclusively U.S.-centred view of pollution issues. The book is nearly unusable as teaching material outside the United States due to this strong focus on U.S. legislation and U.S. specific pollution issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful 26 Jan 2008
By Kea - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I bought this book as a reference for a college project I did about air pollution. It turned out to be the most valuable resource I had. Hill presents sophisticated information in an easy-to-understand manner. This book also made me realize the huge connection between air pollution and many other issues that the world faces today, and it helped me create a straight-forward list of actions my class mates could take to lower their personal contributions to air pollution. I got an "A" on my project, and I have a much better understanding of how my everyday choices cause air pollution, the consequences of those choices, and what I can do about it.
Furthermore, even though I focused on the sections involving air pollution, this book also has great information on other types of pollution such as water and solid waste. It is a great introduction to the pollution problem and makes a wonderful resource for a project, an environmental science class, or just personal curiosity.

Pollution is a serious problem that we all need to take seriously. This book explains the seriousness of the problems we face globally and provides links to websites if you want to conduct additional research.
