Book Description

July 1988
People everywhere are seeking answers to help them find happiness and peace of mind. Even though everyone strives for this, many find that lasting joy is missing from their lives and relationships. Some turn to drugs and alcohol to find momentary relief, others live with stress, anger, or depression.
In Understanding, Jane Nelsen explains the four principles of psychological functioning that enable us to unlock our inner wisdom and happiness. Once these principles are understood, one will find treasures buried deep within. Here is just some of what readers will learn from this book:

Understanding that you think is the key to understanding everything else in life
Unconditional good feelings and actions flow naturally from the heart
All relationships can be enhanced through an understanding of separate realities
One of the quickest ways to change a mood is through gratitude
When the four principles described in this book are understood, the beauty of life is profound. What once seemed ordinary or insignificant can be seen with appreciation and gratitude.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most dog-eared book in my self-help library 9 Nov 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Of the hundreds of self-help books I have bought, this is the only one that I have read several times. It completely changed how I saw situations and people, which in turn changed how I felt about them. The principle of Thinking as a Function explains how a person reacts to programmed thought systems. The principle of Separate Realities explains how a person can interpret or filter their world. It is mostly a how-to book, though not step by step, with anecdotes thrown in.
This book isn't about positive thinking (which is just another programmed thought system, according to the author). It's also more than reframing situations; it teaches you how to get to an 'understanding' where you really do see things differently.
Some thoughts and detours the author discusses which keep us from peace of mind: insecurity, judgments, stereotyping, judgments from others, living for or against someone else, proving ourselves, working on self-esteem, anger, and the past. Ultimately, this is a book about creating close relationships with others and sanity with yourself.

I have used this book to help me understand myself and others. We are the ones that cause our own sorrow, no one else is to blame. I have given this book to my friends and it has helped them in their relationships with their families.
