Product Description

This book looks at company announcements, focussing on those issued through the London Stock Exchange by listed companies.

Almost all these announcements - such as annual results, share buying by directors, profit warnings and updates on current trading - are required under stock exchange rules or European Union directives. This book explains these rules and shows how to make sense of the announcements; enabling investors and others to take informed decisions.

The book is divided into three sections:Section A looks at what the rules are, why they have been imposed and how they have evolved to give private investors a much fairer opportunity of competing with professional investors.

Section B lists and explains the routine statements that all companies issue on a regular basis: trading statements and profit figures. It tells readers what to look for, explains company jargon and shows how to read between the lines when all is not as well as it seems.

Section C considers important announcements, such as profit warnings and directors' share dealings, that are issued on an irregular basis as they arise. It explains which announcements are likely to affect the share price and why.

'Understanding Company News' is for all those baffled shareholders who throw communications from their companies straight into the bin and any investors who read company pronouncements but perhaps naively take everything they see at face value. And anyone working in related industries looking to untangle these company announcements will also find this book extremely valuable.

From the Author

There's a welter of information freely available on all the companies quoted on the London Stock Exchange. Some investors don't bother to look for it; some feel their eyes glazing over before they commit it to the dustbin; others get bogged down in petty detail.

Understanding Company News tells you what to look for and where to look. It tells you when information is released and how to spot it. It tells you what kind of information is useful and how to use the facts that are put before you, sifting out the verbiage from the gold nuggets. It explains what companies are obliged to tell their shareholders and what they try to obscure.

You learn to disregard the meaningless phrases that directors pour out and to grasp instead the hidden messages, especially the warning signs.

Above all, the book is packed with real examples of announcements released by companies, each carefully explained. These are grouped to illustrate the different types of statements that every company issues.

Understanding Company News follows on naturally from my first book, Shares Made Simple. Once you understand what stock market investing is all about you are ready to give yourself the edge over uninformed investors.

However, the book is not just for private investors. It is an essential tool for those aspiring to a career in the City including stockbroking, public relations and auditing.

This is a great book to help you navigate through the jungle of company announcements and results reporting. We've all seen it happen - the bullish updates on trading which are just as swiftly followed by a plummeting share price as reality kicks in.

Rodney Hobson's excellent guide will help you penetrate the spin which nearly every company tries to put on its performance, and to judge for yourself whether they're being truthful or not.

The author is particularly good at highlighting those bland generalisations which pepper company statements and which are intended to inspire confidence (the company is `well positioned', or has a `strong operational platform' for instance - all mostly meaningless).

He applies a healthy scepticism to a series of actual company announcements throughout the book. These analyses are particularly illuminating (for example, on the troubled building group Wolseley who had announced that they were `evaluating all their options'. Surely you would expect any competent board to be evaluating all their options, says Hobson, so it says nothing. Ditto the chocolate maker Thornton's, who highlighted `putting customers at the forefont' - businesses ought to be doing this automatically, he says, so why do they need to say it?).

On the financial side the book also encourages you to delve deeper and look beyond the bare figures provided, and gives some good advice on how to do this. It also explains the regulations around routine statements and how other important announcements (such as profit warnings and directors' dealings) will impact company shares. Well worth the cover price.

No book has given me more cause for thought than this one. How the market reply's to news is something of an enigma to me, news that you would regard as good and the market tanks, news that you regard as benign and the market rallies.

What in God's name is going on?

Rodney gives translations to the market announcements, giving translations that you just wouldn't have thought of. He gives examples of things to look for when their trying to bury bad news, and also when their trying to calm the markets nerves. This is a very subjective subject, but for the fundamentalist it's a must. This book is only the beginning, only experience can teach you, but this book is an excellent start.
