Book Description

11 May 2005
This major new work surveys all chess openings, providing a guide to every critical main line and featuring descriptions of the typical strategies for both sides. These commentaries will be welcomed by all club and tournament players, as they will help them to handle the middlegame positions arising from each opening better, and will equip them to find the best continuation when their opponents deviate from the standard paths.

Covers all chess openings, with verbal explanations of the ideas. This is the first book of the modern era to do this.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent openings primer 3 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
Anyone new to chess or a hobby player can be overwhelmed by the vast libraries of opening theory. Most books are too advanced and assume to much knowledge of the game. They provide a wealth of variations often with little or no explanation in English of what is happening.

Sam Collins's concise book attemps to fill this gap. I would recommend this book to any novice or club player who is embarking on creating an opening repertoire. Having digested the nuggets of information contained in this book, the budding player will then be able to explore John Watson's superb 4-volume "Mastering the Chess Openings" (also published by Gambit) with profit.

A very good book. The correct detail in the opennings, showing the main lines and main ideas. A must to read for beginers or intermediate players.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent bite sized advice about openings 20 April 2007
Format:Paperback
Ever wanted to know about a chess opening but not keen to buy a whole book on the subject? (In case it doesn't suit your style) Then get this book. I use it all the time. Also he has some pithy comments in the text, including amusingly slagging off the Blackmar-Diemar Gambit (which I had never heard of). So if you want a primer for chess openings, this would be my recommendation.
