Review

"[Understanding Buildings] should be required reading in the first years of all schools of architecture." --Canadian Architect "Understanding Buildings fills the gap between the overly simple and the overly specialized in an admirable way, without oversimplification, unnecessary jargon, or pedantry ... Technical information is introduced in a straightforward, logical manner." --Eric Dluhosch, MIT "A most useful tool for developing intuition in architectural engineering for architects, engineers, and builders alike." --Omer Akin, Carnegie Mellon University --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

This book meets the needs for a basic, yet comprehensive and up-to-date, introductory text to building technology for students in architecture and the other disciplines in building design. The wide coverage is organised under the chapter headings: structure, enclosure, climate services, utility services, lighting, acoustics, fire safety, the future?  The treatment in each case is concentrated on the close relationship between good design practice and the basic underlying scientific and practical principles, but stopping short of the high level theory which is to be found in other more closely specialised texts. This well illustrated and highly readable book will be invaluable to the student and of interest to the practitioner too, both in architecture and in its related technical fields.

Understanding Buildings: A Multi Disciplinary Approach provides an excellent introduction to the construction industry in terms of the fabric and services contained within contemporary buildings. It comes highly recommended to students of vocational courses such as architecture and other professional construction related courses. At the same time its readability would make it very accessible to a general interested party.

The book is set out into distinct and logical headings; it includes a reasonable amount of technical information without delving unnecessarily into the specific details. The text deals with a range of edifices from small-scale residential dwellings to commercial high rise structures. Within this range it covers items such as the services, cladding and safety requirements peculiar to each type of building. It concisely explains the terminology of building from a practical viewpoint and is illustrated with numerous clear and well-placed diagrams. As a result it makes an effective companion to any of the more technical data books.

In conclusion it is fair to say that Reid's book is a useful first stepping-stone for students of the built environment. It must be noted that the book does not attempt to do anything other than introduce the reader to the construction world.

I am studying with the College of Estate Management and this book is on the reading list. The author is a natural at explaining the complex without unnessesary techincal jargon or detail and yet without omitting the essentials. Reid has a true talent and this book is one of the clearest on any subject that I have read
