Product Description

Product Description
What is the Bible really all about? Why was it written and can it be trusted? Why should we read it? In this revised edition of a classic work, John Stott answers these questions. With his usual clarity and authority he spells out the Bible's purpose, examines the social, geographical and historical background, and outlines the Bible's story line. He then guides readers to apply the Bible's teaching to their daily lives. This new edition contains new focus questions, charts, diagrams and indexes.

From the Back Cover
This book answers foundational questions: Who wrote the Bible? What is its message? Why is it thought to be a "holy" book? How does one read and interpret it? Best of all, though, you'll broaden your vision of Jesus Christ, the focal point of Scripture. How? By better understanding the geographical, religious, and historical concerns that shaped the world in which he lived. You'll see Jesus as never before: both as a man of his times and culture, and as the culmination of a divine providence that prepared the way for the ministry of the Messiah. Written by renowned preacher, writer, and apologist John Stott, this new, expanded edition includes - Questions at the beginning of each chapter to help you focus - New, up-to-date maps for the chapters on history and geography - An index to help you speedily access areas of interest. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Understanding the Bible - John Stott, 6 Jan 2007
By D. J. Herbert "David Herbert" (Harrow, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a jewel of a book. Written in John Stott's beautifully lucid and clear style, it provides the reader with a simple, yet rich, overview of the Bible. Understanding the Bible explores the Scripture's historical and geographical context, its meaning and purpose, and its authority and inspiration from a thoughtful conservative position. While probably designed for newer Christians, reading it will repay all Christians and any interested readers with fresh insight and a marvelous breadth of scope. The book's greatest strength is Reverand Stott's rare ability to distil the Bible's central story with clarity without losing the sense of Scripture's richness or complexity. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Walk-Through The Entire Word (Genesis To Revelation), 13 Nov 2003
First time reading John Stott's book from having heard some references to him by reputable and trustworthy preachers (Chuck Swindoll, John MacArthur et al) and was very impressed picking up this book.
The book makes the bible understanding clear and distinctly identifies historical, the environmental factors not to be ignored during the readings of the OT, like agriculture being the most popular way of life, the proximal distances between the involved nations/kingdoms, culture, traditions and so on, which when at the back of one's mind in studying the bible, a fuller picture is built in the mind hence better understanding. Into the NT, and the same illustrative and expressive, symbolic languages used to describe events by Jesus and the apostles(also like in the OT), are explained to be cleared of misrepresentation by Stott. Good book all round, for all (non-)christians alike.
