Book Description

14 Mar 2009
Revival is an amazing outpouring of the Holy Spirit as the dew of God's heavenly blessing descends to revive the Church and saves sinners, as God vindicates His name. But history records that many who have prayed for revival have rejected it when it came because they misunderstood the workings of the Holy Spirit and only wanted God to bless the Church on their terms and not His.

During times of heavenly visitations there are Divine paradoxes; times of solemn commotion and Divine disorder which involves sifting and shaking, repentance, brokenness and confession of sin mingled amongst the shouts of praise and adoration as the Refiner comes to prepare a pure and holy Bride, to glorify Jesus. During revival in the midst of God's dynamic, the devil will come to infiltrate and imitate so let us understand revival so that we do not reject it when He comes or bring the work of God into disrepute.

Understanding Revival and Addressing the Issues it Provokes; through the use of Scripture and church history reveals how we can intelligently cooperate with the Holy Spirit during times of revivals and awakenings and not reject His workings due to religious affections, physical phenomena or manifestations and that we may be not be caught unaware of the tactics of the enemy.

Including: Understanding Revival - What is it? The Beginnings and Characteristics of Revival, Reoccurring Experiences in Revival, Common Characteristics of Physical Phenomena, The Dangers of Revival, Misperceptions of God's Workings, Human Emotions, Disunity Within the Body, False and Spurious Converts, Why Revivals Cease, Warnings and Wisdom, Revival Merchandise and Memorabilia and Evaluating the Past and Looking Forward.

5.0 out of 5 stars Understanding Revival 24 April 2009
Format:Paperback
This book is the latest interesting, informative and challenging book from Mathew Backholer who is making his mark in the field of revival authorship.

This book examines the controversial issues often found in moves of God. It is a contemporary examination of the subject matter - much like Jonathan Edwards did in his day. It brings in a wealth of research from numerous revivals to substantiate the comments and observations. The depth of research is evident. He leaves you to consider your own viewpoint of the issues rather than imposing his own thoughts and conclusions which is the mark of a good communicator.

This book is not a comfortable read as it looks at some of the negative aspects of revivals, which by their very nature are controversial. It encourages the reader to examine the issues thoroughly and paints a clearer, less air-brushed version of what may happen when God brings a revival. Despite some of the subject matter it still creates a hunger in the reader to call out to God for a revival despite the negative or controversial aspects which may arise. It allows the historical moves of God to speak clearly to us in our day, and to our generation, so that we may `stand on the shoulders of giants.'

The format of the book is excellent and whether you want to read from cover to cover or dip into a particular topic it is easy to do so.

Understanding Revival is quite a different angle from many of the revival books that are currently out on the market and having read other books by Mathew Backholer, I can recommend this author and his latest book to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars True and False Revival 18 Dec 2012
Format:Paperback
I found `Understanding Revival' a fascinating read. The author makes some bold statements in the preface, and some startling comments throughout the book, yet qualifies these statements from the Holy Bible and from case examples of church history and frequently quotes.

It is true that many people who have faithfully prayed for revival have rejected it when it came because they misunderstood the working of God, yet because of Scripture and examples of from church this should not be. The author also point out the deceptions of the enemy in that he infiltrates and imitates and that there are always attention or lovers of fads in any move of the Holy Spirit and how these situations should be handled.

There are some fascinating chapters of the human emotions and how we may respond when God touches our lives or the lives of others and the chapter on Revival Merchandise and Memorabilia is in itself unique. Some of the revivals quoted and case examples are quite obscure in far-flung places of the world which reveals the depth of research over years which had produced this five star book. The sources and notes are packed with old and modern books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommendable 28 Sep 2010
By Jeong-hwan Lee - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book `Understanding Revival" by Mathew Backholer is a well-written book. Needless to say, this book is one of millions of revival books. Then, what makes this book different from other revival books?

1. This book has a mini-encyclopedia character. This book treats all kinds of issues on revivals though each issue is not so much profoundly presented. But, thereby, readers can review characteristics of revival quickly and broadly.

2. Broadly speaking, this book is well balanced. This book shows not only positive facets but also negative facets with sufficient carefulness. Indeed, this is helpful for ordinary readers in order to understand revival soundly.

3. Extensive historical examples reflect author's wide interest and zeal for revival. Readers can learn from every revival examples in this book and extend their interest further based upon short introduction of each example in this book.

But there are some points I concern.
On page 100-101, about Toronto Blessing, from my point of view, the mere statistical data cannot support the soundness of the movement. And, on page 228, about Lakeland outpouring, from my point of view, the explanation about this "happening" is not thoroughly examined. I must say, and some might know that there are un-orthodox backgrounds of these types of movements which cannot be detailed in here. On page 101, about cessation theology, from my point of view, the author did not fully disclosed of the deep background of this theology on which still many sound contemporary Christians and historical big-shots of theology and missions firmly stand.

All in all, generally speaking, this book is certainly a narrative-type not a deep digging academic thesis type with specially regard to theological issues. Therefore, people who want to know certain issues in depth on revival, this book cannot meet their hope. But, people who want to review widely and briefly on revival, this book would be an excellent choice, indeed.
