More About the Author

Formerly a teacher, editor and A level examiner, Mel Thompson is a freelance writer, with a particular interest in Philosophy and Ethics both for the general reader and for students.

His most recent publication is 'The Philosopher's Beach Book'. Inviting you to 'wiggle your toes in the sand and think', it offers light reading to get you thinking - with 25 short pieces, each focusing on a general question about life. Ideal as a holiday read, it is suitable for anyone with an interest in philosophical questions, and assumes no background knowledge.

Mel is a member and former Chair of the Educational Writers Group at the Society of Authors in London, and is interested in exploring ways in which new technology can enhance opportunities for writers.

Convinced that some things are easier to 'see' than to explain, Mel Thompson is a keen photographer, with a section on 'visual philosophy' on his website and, recognizing the importance of personal roots, is also interested in local history.

His website (www.philosophyandethics.com) provides information on all his books, along with recommendations and reviews of other publications in Philosophy and Ethics, as well as a range of lecture notes on topics suitable for students.

Excellent beginners' guide to Ethics 28 Mar. 2011
By Hyoureki - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Mel Thompson's "Understand Ethics" is exactly what it advertises itself to be, a beginner-friendly introduction to classic ideas and discussions in the study of ethics. The layout of the book is excellent: topics are presented in a natural order, followed by related ideas put forth by classic philosophers (Kant, Hume, Hobbes, Nietzsche, etc.) and connections to modern day events and debates. The 2010 revision adds some reflections on more current events, including the recent economic crisis. Thompson adds a few opinions of his own, particularly in the conclusion, but they are always clearly delineated and well explained. All-in-all, I was very happy with the book and surprised to see that it had not been reviewed yet. If you're looking for a well written launchpad into Ethics that takes into account modern-day culture, look no further.

Super readable 15 Sept. 2013

So ethics is a strange subject, not least because people equivocate it with cultural customs or the law much of the time. Understand Ethics: A Teach Yourself Guide does a fantastic job of disambiguating the term (ethics) from law, custom, habit, and religion. It provides real life examples from newspaper articles to discuss ethics in a real world context. It makes the subject matter digestible and likeable and possibly even enjoyable.

It's a good book for light reading and a quick tutorial on different systems of ethics. Better for the Christian or other monotheistic belief systems.
