Product Description

The Sonic Screwdriver is a versatile tool and defensive device first used by the Doctor in his second incarnation for opening up hatches, panels and controls. Later uses included cutting through wall sections and even as a conventional screwdriver. During the Third Doctor's exile on Earth he had a larger and more elaborately detailed version, which had a decorated silver handle and black and yellow stripes. This version had even more functions including detecting security traps, remote detonation of mines, opening doors and restraints, creating ignition sparks and again removing screws and fixings. Later still the Fourth Doctor remade yet another similar style of Sonic Screwdriver but with many more features and functions including micro soldering of circuitry, cutting wires and bulkheads and even detonating Dalek explosives.

Character have never had it this easy since the Cassandra/Destroyed Cassandra atrocity, and they know it. On the one hand, you have the sonic screwdriver of indisputably the most popular incarnation of the Doctor from the classic series (and arguably, of all time) and on the other, a nice, quick and easy excuse to repaint and repackage the Pertwee model. While it's not quite the Destroyed Cassandra of the toy world, I feel it's not been done without a little rubbing of hands.

It's very difficult to review this without going 'see my Pertwee review.' It's the same chassis, and while accurate, the colouration is blander. There's some slightly different detailing in the head, but that's it. The sound effects are still wrong, which has aggravated older fans further given that there wasn't much else to change on this model. The same spring activated mechanism has the potential for trouble if not respected and again you have the same quandary: older fans will be maddened by the inaccuracies, younger fans will prefer the newer, shinier models and even those stuck in the middle like me can't shy away from the fact that this is a quick refresh and repack.

It's not that it's a bad toy, and in many ways, you can't blame Character for staying faithful to the prop, after all, they didn't devise the original. But what rankles most is in not fixing what fans found fault with (the sound) when there was really nothing else to change. Might I suggest a re-tune and re-release of the 3rd and 4th screwdrivers as a twin pack at say, £30 to make forking out twice for nigh-on the same (wrongish) screwdriver less painful?
