Underground Maps After Beck is an excellent book. The follow up to Mr Beck's Underground Map by Ken Garland, covering the period 1960 to the present day, with a overview of the diagram up to that point. The book is an highly enjoyable read, informative and entertaining with a wonderful selection of colour diagrams of the Map. For anyone with an interest in the Underground Map this is a essential purchase. Highly recommended.
A big fan of Harry Beck, and a regular tube-user, I bought this after agreeing to go with a friend to a U3A lecture by the author. It's expensive for a skinny book but good although occasionally heavy going with Dr Roberts being an academic (an 'ologist' not an engineer or transport planner). Also slightly nerdy, at least compared to 'Mr. Beck's Underground Map' by Ken Garland which I enjoyed more. That said, it will probably appeal to the tuboholics out there and to train spotters, of which there are plenty. Hence the 4-star rating: it's definitely one for the boys.
A great companion book to "Mr Beck's Underground map". Contains a lot of details about the intricate changes from one map to another and adjustments made to fit new lines onto the map. Same dimensions as Mr Beck's Underground map - approx 24x28 cm or 9.5x11 inches; 112 pages to Mr Beck's 80. Maps on at least 80 of the pages. Includes an interesting chapter of maps from sources other than London Transport and its successors. Packed with facts; need to concentrate!
