I've never seen the Underground Ernie series but my uncle bought one of these for my son and my son loves it.

Not hugely sophisticated - the button on the top turns it on and off and it just trundles along in straight lines but it is quite powerful when it has new batteries. The wheels fit on to the Brio tracks but it isn't really designed to do this and gets suck at the corners.

When my son drags it the wrong way, the little rubber tyres are prone to move off the centre of the wheel base stopping the wheels from turning. You can fix this with a bit of fiddling around but I think they will break eventually. It has provided hours of entertainment and I would thoroughly recommend it!
