Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Unquestionably Britain's premier jazz musician, Courtney Pine continues on Underground the process he began on Modern Day Jazz Stories of using drum & bass sampling within a small jazz group context. Once more it is DJ Pogo who supplies the additional beats via the turntable and is brought slightly nearer to front of the mix than the previous Talkin' Loud album. But in taking his music further Pine never leaves his jazz influences behind. Cannonball and John Coltrane come through as much as dance grooves with Pine soloing hard in "The Book Of ... (The Dead)" and becomes almost Arabesque in "Invisible (Higher Vibe)". Indeed, Pine's sax playing gets surer with every album. Acid jazz vocalist Jhelisa guests on "Save The Children" and the single, a cover of Donny Hathaway's soulful lament on ghetto life, "Tryin' Times". What emerges from Undergroundis a challenging combination of modern soul, sampling and jazz improvisation. This is an album that is well worth digging out of the attic. --Phil Brett

5.0 out of 5 stars Going Underground, 3 April 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Underground (Audio CD)
This album is the most prolific and thought- inducing peice of Jazz fusion to date.

The first track is a skit of peices that appear in the album, the flavour of things to come. this album also begins Mr. Pine's love of mixing Jazz with contemporary culture. For example, who would think that mixing modern jazz with distinctive lines from the StreetFighter 2 computer game (i.e. "YOU LOSE") would actually sound cool?

If you are a hardcore fan of Mr. Pine's works, then you will notice that in this album he uses modern culture to express his music (whether it be Hip Hop catchphrases or lines from computer games). Incidentally, the album after this was "Another Story", where some of the tracks on this album were converted to momentous D&B tracks.

Nuff said, enjoy this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars A revolutionary jazz/drum'n'bass hybrid, 6 April 2000
This review is from: Underground (Audio CD)
From the opening chords to the closing beats, this album is worth every penny. Courtney takes jazz way beyond fellow musicians, and creates different moods throughout the CD. A fantastic blend of jazz, sampling, and drum'n'bass, this is a truely beautiful album! Stick it in the trolley!

Really good album, as with Modern Day Jazz Stories, i would look for a little more variation. Nevertheless, a great piece of art.
