Product Description

Canine adventure based on the popular animated TV series. After an accident in the mysterious lab of mad scientist Dr. Simon Barsinister (Peter Dinklage), an ordinary beagle named Shoeshine (voice of Jason Lee) finds himself with extraordinary powers, and the ability to talk. Armed with a fetching superhero costume, Underdog vows to protect the beleaguered citizens of Capital City and, in particular, a beautiful spaniel named Polly Purebred (voice of Amy Adams). When a diabolical plot by Barsinister and his overgrown henchman Cad (Patrick Warburton) threatens to destroy Capital City, only Underdog can save the day.

From Amazon.co.uk

What happens when mad scientist Dr. Simon Barsinister (Peter Dinklage) and a former police beagle Shoeshine (voiced by Jason Lee) are involved in a fiery lab accident? A dog with superpowers (soon to be dubbed "Underdog") is born, and Dr. Barsinister becomes a man obsessed with revenge and bent on genetically modifying the entire population of Capital City. An unwitting former policeman, Dan (James Belushi), and his son Jack (Alex Neuberger) adopt Shoeshine in the hope of improving their strained relationship. What follows is a typical scene of home destruction by a young dog, multiplied exponentially by the incredible strength, speed, and newly developed language skills of one super dog. While Jack and Shoeshine struggle with the conflict between Shoeshine's desire to be a regular dog and Jack's insistence that he use his newfound powers to help people, mayhem reigns in Capital City as Barsinister and his henchman Cad (Patrick Warburton-- Emperor's New Groove) wreak havoc on the entire city and Jack's dad, schoolmate Molly (Taylor Momsen) and her dog Polly (voiced by Amy Adams--Enchanted) are all unwittingly dragged into the conflict. Underdog dedicates himself to good, quickly becoming revered as a superhero, but ultimately it will take the combined efforts and understanding of Underdog, Jack, Dan, Molly, and Polly to defeat Barsinister and save Capital City from destruction. Based on the original animated Underdog television series, this live action film is entertaining, if not great.

Bonus features include deleted scenes with director introductions, bloopers, a 5-minute glimpse of the logistics of shooting animals and blending live action with animation, and the first Underdog cartoon "Safe Waif." (Ages 3 to 12) --Tami Horiuchi

I bought this simply because it was cheap and looked like harmless fun...and it is...BIG TIME FUN!

This modern, live action take of an apparently ancient American cartoon is an absolute scream. I suppose the idea is a little different... a superhero dog? But don't let that put you off. The characters, both human and animal are engaging, the script is snappy and the action is plentiful, exciting and brilliant.

I found a lot of the action was hilariously funny, and without any of that `keystone cop' type idiocy. The most endearing part of this film was that despite the fact that the main character is a beagle, the story brought out in me the range of emotions, and had me bouncing in my seat once or twice, one moment excited, and the next holding my breath in anticipation. The only thing I can't understand is why on earth hadn't I heard of this film before now?

Only the most boring, stuffiest of adults could possibly dislike this film, and the kids will love it.

This film should rate in your collection alongside such greats as `Antz', `The Incredibles', `Bee Movie', and `Carz'. Highly recommended.

When my daughter made me buy this I was dreading the idea of watching it. What could be worse that yet another annoing film about a superhero? And a dog - what kind of superhero could that be, other than lame?

This just goes to show how WRONG you can be in pre-judging a movie. This movie isn't deep (why should it be), but the script is hilarious, the characters are great and the overall effect is fantastic - it's a genuinely funny movie which you will want to watch with your family over and over again.

This film is worth buying just for the script!

With films such as this, I tend to refer to my children's opinion as much as mine because it is of course a DVD I bought for them to watch (they are of infant and primary school age). We've had it for over a month and I measure its worth by the number of times they want to watch it - which I've long since lost count of! We have most of the 'inevitables' in our collection, from Toy Story through Monsters Inc, all the Shreks, Finding Nemo, both Ice Ages and many many more, and Underdog, while being slightly different in not being an animated film, has proved just as popular. It's a U certificate so there's no need to worry about any element of it that might not be suitable for a 5 year old. Children love animals of course, and this film combines a lovable dog with a sharp, funny script that adults will enjoy too (or should).

It looks to be a massive improvement on the original comic strip on which it is based, which I think was televised in the 1970s or thereabouts. For what I wanted it to do - to make my children laugh and keep them watching it repeatedly - it delivers the goods completely and while it's not a timeless classic in our DVD collection for kids, it's a worthy inclusion and I personally recommend it.

Watched this with my husband and two sons - ages 4 & 8.

It got pretty much straight into the 'action', so my youngest (4) didn't have time to bored like he usually does.... which makes a change!

Great film, enjoyed by all.

The American version of “Underdog” on a 'Disney’ BLU RAY is REGION-A LOCKED - so it WILL NOT PLAY on most UK Blu Ray players unless they're chipped to play 'all' regions (which the vast majority aren't). Don’t confuse BLU RAY players that have multi-region capability on the 'DVD' front – that won’t help.

Buy the standard UK issue instead. It's cheap - a looker on BLU RAY - and a lot of family fun…

I have to say, I wasn't that interested in buying this Dvd, but my 4 year old kept asking for it so I gave in and we watched it that evening.I was pleasantly surprised by it, I have seen so many films with talking cats and dogs so didn't expect anything new but this was actually funny, its a great film, not just for kids.
