I was impressed with the quality of the writing in this book. The basic plotline is a space military man Jazen, retired and working in a saloon, being called back into service to rescue an old flame (and military colleague, Kit) who's lost and unheard from, on another planet. He's motivated by rescuing her, as well as some old fashioned manipulation on the part of a man who knows more about his history, to gain info on his own past. This is part of a larger series, so in truth I was a little lost with all of the references to alien races and planets, long ended space wars, etc. I believe that the previous books in the series would fill me in more on all of this, but in any case, the descriptive language of the various alien life forms the protagonist encounters is impressive. I was often transported to the alien worlds myself, thanks to all the great detail. And it isn't bogged down by this- the detail is delivered succinctly as the story moves quickly.
The author is capable of combining elements of classic sci-fi movies like Aliens or Starship Troopers, but add both incredibly descriptive elements with the added bonus of first person thoughts and observations. I liked the book quite a bit, and recommend it to anyone that enjoys this genre. I would recommend too, however, that someone start at the beginning of the series. It was (for me, a certified bonehead) a bit overwhelming early on to gather all the differences between the alien races and their back history with each other.
