Synopsis

Exposing the real-life gangland war which raged for over a decade, UNDERBELLY is itself based on the book LEADBELLY: INSIDE AUSTRALIA'S UNDERWORLD by journalists John Silvester and Andrew Rule. This, sometimes fictionalised, account compacts the bitter feud into 13 nail-biting episodes.

The action begins in 1995 when the Melbourne crime syndicate 'the Carlton Crew' dominate the scene. Drug dealing brothers Jason and Mark Moran (Les Hill and Callan Mulvey) emerge as key players, and are kept under the scrutinising eyes of police officers Steve Owen (Rodger Corser) and Jacqui James (Caroline Craig), members of Task Force Purana. When Jason's driver Carl Williams (Gyton Grantley) double-crosses the brothers in a drug scam it sparks off a chain of bloody events; with more double-crossings, alliances made, alliances broken, extortion, hits ordered, killings, avenge killings and numerous spells in prison. With slick production design, and a huge cast of colourful characters interweaving across the show's long time-frame, it's clear why UNDERBELLY has been heralded one of Australia's best ever crime dramas.

Absolutely riveting insight into the Melbourne (Australia, not Derbyshire!) gangland war 1995-2004. Brilliant performances, brilliant casting and an unbelievable series of slip-ups and mistakes which could only happen in real life. 13 episodes, you'll be glued to the screen. Highly, highly recommended.

I must be one of the only people to watch this before seeing The Sopranos, the de facto standard for modern gangster action that everyone raves about, and it was so good that I'm disappointed by Sopranos now I've finally got round to watching it!

The series follows the real-life gangland war that broke out in Melbourne a few years ago. Two of the biggest crime families found themselves feuding over turf in the lucrative drug distribution business and real and imagined slights between rivals on the streets. A tit for tat chain of hits follows as more underworld characters are drawn in by loyalty or the promise of bounty. The Police swooped on the aftermath, breaking down the code of silence as street level criminals facing heavy sentences abandoned their loyalty and turn police informer - bringing the whole deck of cards down and resulting in the surviving bosses facing life sentences.

Lots of fighting, sex, drugs and murder - so be warned.

Underbelly has really raised the bar for Aussie drama. Watching it whilst in Australia and talking to people and seeing little bits here and then in the newspapers and on the news also added a lot of authenticity for me, knowing that not only did this gangland war happen but it was a recent event, with some of the (surviving) characters still very much alive and kicking.

The characters, scripting and screenplay are top-notch and set to a great soundtrack, you know a good gangster film when you you you feel loyalty to men that do evil deeds (like Tony Soprano, Frank Lucas (American Gangster) and Ray Liotta's character in Goodfellas) - so don't be suprised if you find yourself taking sides in the gang war.

Like Flight of the Conchords (NZ comedy series) I don't think underbelly has made it to the UK just yet, not in a big way anyway, so there's a big treat coming for Sopranos fans...

We've just finished watching the uncut DVD set and just couldn't wait to get to each new episode, we watched about 3 episodes a night. It features very graphic shooting scenes, quite a lot of sex (close your eyes gran) and it's definately not one for the youngsters.
Based on true events in Melbourne, it's a gritty insight into the tangled web of the gangland underworld, and how you really can't trust anyone as there's always someone who'll bump you off, for the right price.
Great soundtrack, very good casting (some people will recognise some of the actors from popular Aussie soaps) It's actually very amusing in parts, I'd describe it as a cross between Chopper and a Guy Ritchie movie. Excellent !! - When's the soundtrack available? - that's what I want to know.
