5.0 out of 5 stars UNDER A CLOUD! But the Sun's Gonna Shine Someday 20 July 2009
Format:Audio CD
This may be "UNDER A CLOUD," but the Sun's Comin' Out Soon!, June 24, 2009
By Bruce Combs "REACH BEYOND" (Williamsburg VA USA) - See all my reviews

I cannot imagine anything that Yvonne Smeets does not do at the highest level. Certainly that is true of her highest honors (suma cum laude)formal study at the prestigious Royal Conservatory in The Hague; meanwhile teaching, and performing jazz vocals, as well as sharing the raising of a family with partner Menno. And she writes or adapts melodies and lyrics in at leasttwo other languages, as if her own! Surely there is awesome wonder here even for people least experiencd in jazz. At the same time perhaps only another musician highly accomplished in the history, theory, and performance of music can reach the depths and heights Yvonne's music, and her performance of it provides. For how difficult and tricky are many of the feats she glides gracefully through as if no challenge at all. But you needn't be trained in music at all -- I'm not! -- to sync with her vibes, to travel incredibly from one musical height to another, touching the deepest valley on the way. Yvonne's great rapport with the band - their mutual respect and unselfishness - is easy to fee on this CD. So often they reach levels as smoothly harmonious as if they were all the same person extraordinarily playing one instrument! It is difficult to believe that UNDER A CLOUD is Yvonne's first CD. I'm looking forward to a lot more of them. But this first one will smoothly satisfy my attention for a long time. Thank you, Yvonne, for giving all of us so much!
