This book is a national and a world treasure.
I bought the hardback copy and in spite of the inferior quality of the paper, font and print job, the value of the book is all the same.
The translation is poor even though the effort to translate can be found in the footnotes. It seems to me that this book was translated to English by a non English speaker and not enough time was spent on editing the content in order to be made more readable in English. In Bulgaria this book is a mandatory read in grade school, but due to the rather choppy translation, an English speaking teen or a pre-teen would struggle mightily and would be turned off by this translation.
The book consists of several intertwined stories of figures pro and cons the Bulgarian uprising for freedom from within the Ottoman empire. The book is the Bulgarian version of Brave Heart and in many ways is a much more thoughtful and touching story than the latter.
