Product Description

With popcorn acoustic guitars, trampoline fiddles, bumper-car bass lines, and caramel-coated sax, the Dave Matthews Band's major-label debut is like an evening at the fair. "The Best of What's Around" and "What Would You Say" swirl like the amusement-park ride on the album's cover, sweeping the exhilarated and light-headed listener higher as the ride spins faster. "Satellite" glides breezily like the prettiest horse on the carousel, "Ants Marching" runs around hitting the bell with the sledgehammer and winning the largest stuffed animals at the target-range booths, and "Lover Lay Down" is the quietest moment on the disc--like the sun setting on a baby's sleeping, snow-cone-stained face collapsed on her daddy's shoulder. --Beth Massa

5.0 out of 5 stars Your arse in a sling 13 Oct 2001
Format:Audio CD
The first album by DMB and its an absolute chestnut. Each track is unique and couples Dave Matthews poetic brilliance with the musical talents of the band and, unlike a good deal of DMB's work since Dave allows Leroi Moore sensational sax and Boyd Tinsley's fiddle to take songs like "Dancing Nancies", "Jimi Thing" and the classic "Ants Marching" to another level and singles DMB out as one of the few innovative bands of the nineties. So if you're sick to death of the mind-numbingly drab and fomulaic stuff that gets played to death on the radio, this album is a must and if you're not sick of the same old thing, get this album anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply THE BEST album of all time 9 Jun 2002
Format:Audio CD
I am a big Dave Matthews Band fan, having seen him twice in concert, once in Sheperds Bush, London England, the other in BC Place Stadium in Canada. Two very different locations, but the same great Band. Under The Table And Dreaming was the first album I heard, many years ago whilst living in America. I was hooked ever since. This one simply is the classic and the best. The mixture of rock, pop intertwined with sax and flute playing is superb, and Dave's vocal's just mind blowing. The lyrics are touching, and the emotion behind the singing great. For anyone who's only heard the single The Space Between and wants to hear more Dave Matthews, this is the album to buy to introduce you to the king of music. Fav songs on the album are Typical Situation and Satellite. Rock on DMB!

The title of this review may sound a bit pretentious, but I feel it is deserved. I have been reflecting on this album for about 5 years now, and I can honestly say that it is my favorite album of all time.

This band is loosely speaking a jam-rock band. Dave Matthews is the principle song-writer, and he sings and plays the acoustic guitar. His playing is not complex, but it is distinct and unique. His songwriting is where his true strength lies, and he is a true genius in this aspect. Listen to both the music and lyrics of 'warehouse' for a fine example. His voice is also distinct, and tends to divide listeners. However, if you like his vocals, then you will find them , as I think he has a polarizing quality. Carter Beauford is an technically-gifted drummer, and his playing is well exhibited on this album, although not in a flashy and distracting way. Stefan Lessard plays the bass, and Leroi Moore and Boyd Tinsley add rich textures to the album, playing saxophone and violin respectively.

The album's themes are generally mellow, searching, earthy and celebratory. The tracks are all excellent, and I will review them separately.

'The Best of What's Around' introduces the album by giving us one of Dave's most comforting messages: 'Hey my friend/It seems your eyes are troubled/Care to share your time with me/Would you say you're feeling low and so/A good idea would be to get it off your mind'. The music is hard to describe, other than uplifting. Leroi Moore's saxophone work is what really elevates this track along with the group vocals at the end, and it gives it an earthy and uplifting quality.

'What Would You Say' has a more bluesy feel, and puts Dave's acoustic guitar at the front of the mix.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing more to say than amazing 16 Nov 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
The Dave Matthews Band is absolutely amazing. They have actually been around for some time and are finally getting the recognition they so much deserve. I almost got the chance to see them in a small club in London in 1994 but at the last minute was not able to. Shame, because they would have been playing a lot of the songs from this release. This is an amazing cd - come to think of it I do not have anything bad to say about any of their releases. Every song on this cd is terrific. The only complaint i have about their cd's is that there is a lot of duplication of songs on their releases (until Before These Crowded Streets). This is a great cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic music from No.1 American band. 2 Nov 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Dave Matthews Band is an excellent, very unique group. They use violin, flute, saxaphone, even banjo and harmonica, along with traditional guitars, drums, etc. All the songs are different, there is no dull repetition of the same tunes you always hear on the radio. Meaningful lyrics, beautiful melodies, great music. Everything from gorgeous love songs to tunes that get your feet tapping. Particularly recommend Typical Situation, Satellite, Ants Marching and What Would You Say, and of course, their other albums. Great starting point if you haven't heard them before. Listen to samples. Sell out tours in the States, huge following, No1 albums, so help them get heard in Britain!

5.0 out of 5 stars reasons to get out from under the table 14 Sep 2002
Format:Audio CD
"Under The Table And Dreaming"was the first DMB album I ever bought(and needless to say not the last!).For anyone who has maybe heard of DMB but aren't to familliar with their work this is a fantastic album to get yourself acquinted with them! From the opening "best Of Whats Around" with its driving and uplifting chourus it sets the seen for the rest of the album.Songs like "What Would You Say" and "Jimi Thing"typify the DMB's appraoch to song writing and more importantly song construction with an emphasis on getting a live jam feeling into the music.Upon hearing this album for the first time I knew i wanted to become a bassist and i would say to anyone musically inclined to seek out this album for the sheer inspiration it can deliver to your own playing. But the other fantastic aspect to this album is Matthews carefully observed acoustic moments especially on "Pay For What You Get" a simple yet trully effective piece of acoustic guitar,as with "Typical situation" and "Lover Lay Down".Certainly buy this album if you want to enjoy real American music(I say real as many of the cultural aspects of American music are present in DMB's music)and be reasured that this album is 8yrs old!there is plenty of new stuff (and earlier material) available.Enjoy it I know you will!!!
