For many Quo fans, Under the Influence is the album which marked a return to form for the band and a return to a 'rockier' sound after the best part of twenty years dabbling with a softer, poppier direction with keyboards to the fore and guitars less prominant. For the most part, I agree with this view but compared to the albums that follow it (Heavy Traffic, The Party Ain't Over Yet, In Search of the Fourth Chord and Quid Pro Quo), it does sound a little 'polite'.

For me, there are plenty of moments on Under the Influence that remind me why I loved Quo in the first place and although I don't like the album as much as Hello!, On the Level or even the latest album, Quid Pro Quo, it ranks among my top 10 favourite Quo albums. While there isn't any really any hard, pumping rock tracks akin to Roll Over lay Down or Backwater on this album (which would have improved it for me) there are certainly more tracks that rock like Quo can than there had been for some time. The title track and Making Waves rock along very nicely indeed, Shine On is a dark, moody, bluesy number and Keep Em Coming wouldn't have sounded out of place on some of the band's early/mid 70s releases. These are all (to me) very good Quo tracks if not excellent outright classics.

However, the main reason I like Under the Influence is its diveristy, one of the features of Quo's music that caused me to love the band in the first place. Although hard-rock and to some extent metal are my favourite rock-pop genres, I also very much enjoy pop, folk and country among others and Quo's output has always touched on these too.

A band who keep on going. Some say this is their best album, but to me it depends on what you like. So add it to your collection but for raw exitement also have one of live albums so you can sing along.

It will be sad when they have to stop one day.

3.0 out of 5 stars under the influence of...the past? 3 Mar 2013

Decent album, whilst not likely to trouble any of the classic 70's discs, this was a pointer to the excellent 'Heavy Traffic which would follow before the band reverted to lame watered down discs again

Excellent tracks such as the title track and 'Twenty Wild Horses' recall the Quo of old and Parfitt has a couple of decent tunes especially 'Shine On',the rest decent if untesting, background music rather than balls to the wall up front grab you by the throat rock.

If available cheap, this was, then its worth a punt, this is an EEC manufactured disc and includes a unlisted bonus track,a rerecorded version of 'Pictures of Matchstickmen',excellent it is to.
