I've rarely watched a tv series that is quite as hit and miss as Under the Dome, its packed full of interesting ideas but not all of it really works.

The set up is basic but brilliant - a mysterious dome appears out of nowhere over Chesters Mill, a small American town. We then follow the townsfolk as they attempt to come to terms with life inside the dome and possibly find a way out. Based on the book by Stephen King and developed by Brian K Vaughan (a writer on Lost as well as various comics including the excellent Y The Last Man) it's very much a cross between Lost and The Stand.

The mystery of the dome is explored slowly but at times feels like a bit of a macguffin as the people trapped inside take centre stage. It seems virtually everyone in the town has a secret of some description so there's plenty of story to go around. There are some complex and interesting characters (Big Jim and his son Junior being standouts) but there are also a few walking cliches that drift in and out. The are moments of great invention but also some real eye rolling, head slapping developments. It's difficult to elaborate more without giving away too much about the plot.

Perhaps it's a case of a series finding its feet in the first season and some of the more interesting threads will be picked up in season two (the final episode here seems to suggest this). I'll be having a crack at season two to find out, in the meantime I'd recommend a go at this to make up your own mind (especially as it's on Amazon Prime at time of writing).

I was hooked on this mini-series after watching episode one. I have not read the book and did not know what to expect from the series. Every episode is packed with action, drama and mystery, and I loved every minute of it. However, I was disappointed that the series is only the first instalment of what is obviously a much longer story. Nowhere on the packaging or advertising material does it indicate "series one" or "first instalment". Consequently, when the last episode was over, and the story was left hanging, I went searching for "Disk 5" only to realise that I now have to wait until "Under the Dome Series 2" is released. I would have been less disapointed if I had known this up-front. So... (Amazon UK) Please include these details on your advertising for similar products in the future. Many Thanks.

The series has a very interesting concept. The mystery behind the Dome is very addictive and I could not help but watch the entire first season. It has plenty of action to keep you entertained, and it has all the special effects to give it a genuine appearance.

My main problem with this series is the dialogue, and a couple of the characters. To start with the dialogue, it was incredibly cliché, and at parts it would be so random it would be as if one of the characters has walked onto the wrong set and got her lines in the wrong conversation. For this to happen once is bad, but it happens several times which is much worse.

One of my biggest gripes (probably my biggest), is Sheriff Linda. Some of her lines are impossibly cheesy, she is incredibly naive yet tries to come across as a 'whiter than white' sheriff, and the law is her only master. Putting herself in the line of fire to avoid unnecessary death to victims and criminals alike, she is your classic hero...

Until for some reason in the last few episodes she has severe amnesia, forgets she is an officer of the law (despite putting on uniform and badge every morning), and watches as Big Jim destroys the town from the inside, starts taking extreme police state measures against its citizens, and even watches as he builds a set of gallows and attempts to use a noose! This for me is beyond belief, and quite frankly she is a worthless flawed character.

Conceptually this is exciting, in execution it's great as well. Performances are to high standard especially Mike Vogel who seems to live every second of this phenomenon, to be honest I only watched the second episode because I wanted to see this actor's next performance, he is magical. Storyline is good, but reminds me too much of the other pilots and series airing on American TV. It's told in a formulaic way, it's shot in a very similar way to other series and with something as terrifically conceptual as Under the Dome, there was an opportunity to start messing with other components of series making, and I felt it was missed.

As I am a HUGE Sci fi fan and of course, HUGE fan of Stephen King, one would think that you cannot go wrong with this combination. Alas, this is probably the only SK story that just could not keep me wanting more. On the contrary, I simply watched it to have "closure" since I had purchased it. The series had no cliff hangers. Great concept that could have unraveled into an excellent series but simply... didn't. I was actually bored a number of times and the series just could not keep me in anticipation of what would happen next.
If any of you plan on watching both "Under the Dome" and "Haven", I strongly suggest you watch "Under the Dome" first and continue with "Haven". Vice versa will only let you down. Haven kinda keeps you wondering all day at work what will happen next whereas, Under the dome....... doesn't.
Another viewer has written in their review that this is more of a soap opera where you follow the daily life and disputes of the people of a small town who are simply restricted under a dome. Yes, I totally agree. And seriously, if the series went on, how many more people would have been "in charge" of the town or become a sheriff? I felt like everyone had a go at it.
