Biography

Here is the last Guided By Voices album. Not in the sense of “Here is the previous Guided By Voices album,” but in the sense of “final.” If it’s true in movies where the voice-over says “You never really appreciate something until it’s gone,” and the credits roll, and you leave the theater with little bits of popcorn stuck to your shoes, then you ... Bought this album ,played it in the, car didn,t like it as it sounded muddy and filed it away.several weeks later feeling bored i spotted it amongst the cd,s and decided to give it another chance.i am very glad i did. What sounded like a dirge in the car with engine and road noise in the background now sounded gloriusly low fi.Kim deal of pixies and Breeders fame, has done an interesting production job on this,it sounds like it,s being beamed in from outer space or under water.Do not let this put you off,do you really need another pristine and twinkly set of tunes in your record collection ? Instead persevere and be amazed at how melody lines slowly unravel themselves to you , how moments of clarity like an odd bit of piano or acoustic guitar pierce through like rays of light, and be thrilled by great washes of guitar noise underpinning tunes that creep into your subconcious.Just dont play it in the car!you might miss out on a treat

I'd say this is my favourite GBV album mainly because it's rarely back in the box - if you're into GBV and haven't got this one, then you'll probably be pleasantly surprised - it's got loud ones, quiet ones, and goes down well with a couple of beers. If you're stuck in traffic or on a train this one will help to get you home in a good mood.

I bought this in the winter of 1996 after hearing the band were purveyors of 60s inspired powerpop in a magazine, and probably expecting a band like Badfinger. So it was quite a shock when it started. Immediate impression was that it sounded like it was recorded onto a cheap cassette machine. It was noisy and very strange. However I stuck with it, and soon the album sunk in and the cheap sounding recording actually adds to its atmosphere. Don't Stop Now, Drag Days, Atom Eyes, Big Boring Wedding, great, great songs. Not to forget the wonderful front cover. I got into GBV after that, but I think this is their best. It contains the right balance of their early lo-fi side to the more polished albums as the millennium dawned.

I think this record has become my favourite album of all time. It is packed with fantastic rock songs like Cut Out Witch and Don't Stop Now, contrasting with the haunting beauty of Acorns and Orioles and the melancholic To Remake the Young Flyer. If you like 'indie rock', this is as good as it gets.

personally its not my fave GBV album - but its still got some great songs on it.

I see GBV's career in 2 parts - the earlier part which is full of sketchy catchy hooks, short songs and sing a long choruses. then the second part which embraced higher production values and the songs became longer with a firmer structure and more ambition - with some definate prog rock leaning and a little more experimentation.

This album is the turning point - there are enough catchy numbers on this too keep a pop fan happy and we start to see songs like 'Offical Ironman rally' appear which have a much more conventional approach and a solid tune rather than a 'catchy hook'.

a good place to start i reckon - if you like the catchy sketchy songs - try earlier records next- if you want better prodcution try isolation drills or earthquake glue for some more Prog rock style songs.
