This book is absolutely gorgeous - from the matt hardback cover with silver foil lettering to the pencil strokes of debut illustrator Lotte Klaver. The story by Anne Fine is thoughtful and delicious to read aloud, with a beating heart that leaves you thinking about friendship and privilege and who is the lucky one.
It's about two friends - a gardener's son and a prince, at first separated by the ridiculous rules of status, and then brought back together by a magical promise that turns out not so magical after all.
The simplicity of the language, the short chapters, the fairy tale like storytelling bely a complex emotional core. This is a story for children too old for picture books but not ready to let go just yet, it's a story to be shared by a parent who is not ready to give up reading aloud, and a child who is not ready to read on his or her own. The book itself as an object, is tactile and special. And watch out for Lotte Klaver - these drawings are beautiful and will bear looking at over and over again.
