4.0 out of 5 stars a review for the release not the album 23 Dec 2009
By J. Vincent - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I'll spare you the review of the album itself and assume you'll read other reviews. I will only state it is my favorite Gorgoroth album.

This version uses the original artwork from the Malicious Records release unlike the previous digipak edition from Season of Mist.

The audio on this CD is a "remastered" version which has sadly been victimized by the loudness war. Comparison of waveforms shows the Regain Records release has been volume boosted to the point of clipping which results in some noticable distortion in the audio. Even worse is The Rite of Infernal Invocation has been trimmed from 6:49 to 4:38 while everything after about 3:30 is simply just noise it has been 6:49 for a whole decade why shave 2:11 off?

Are this problems as bad as some more recent loudness war victims such as Death Magnetic or World Painted Blood? No.
Does it ruin the album? No. But if you've heard a previous release it's just not the same.

My conclusion? Buy the Season of Mist digipak (or if you can find it cheap the original Malicious Records version) and if you must have the original artwork I'm sure you can find some good hi-res scans on the internet and you could place your CD in a jewel case with artwork printed from those scans.

Also to note the Regain Records versions of Pentagram and Antichrist are also "remasters" but since I have not heard them I do not know for certain if they are also clipped as this one is.

5.0 out of 5 stars No excuse for a Black Metal fan to not like this album 4 Jan 2011
By Jake Coker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I find it hard to believe that a serious Black Metal fan could give this anything less than 4 stars.

I seen a review whining about the sound, any Black Metal fan knows that the sound is intentional and it isn't like this is the only BM CD that sounds like it does.

Now on to the individual performances, this is the best lineup Gorgoroth ever had in my opinion. Everyone performs to their best ability. Pest shows just how powerful and diverse of a vocalist he is, he has some truly evil snarls and screams and an operatic sounding clean voice.
Grim may not have been around long, but nobody can deny how great of a drummer he was. He opens the open with his pounding and furious double bass on "Revelation Of Doom" his drumming is very intense and merciless on the ears. I mean that in a good way too.
Then there's the mastermind behind the whole band, Infernus. Yet again he is playing both Bass and Electric guitar and he exceeds on both. His riffs are hauntingly evil but very pleasing to hear at the same time and he wrote all the music here so it's no surprise it's as good as it is.
To be honest, his bass is nothing special here. It isn't bad but when you actually do hear it it's usually just following the guitar.

This is one hell of a CD (No pun intended) and I rank it up there as one of the greatest Metal albums you can purchase along with "Pentagram"

5.0 out of 5 stars Raw black metal 12 Jan 2009
By Alexia - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
In my opinion one of the best Gorgoroth albums I've heard so far. Pest vocals are better fit than Gaahl, not dissing on him. The drums are really fast and powerful, which Grim showcased his talents. Infernus guitar is really exceptional and shows how dedicated is with black metal. Its great that Pest and Infernus are back together and can't wait to hear their new stuff.
