Amazon.co.uk Review
Steven Seagal can consider himself lucky if he ever makes a better movie than this one, which was appropriately dubbed "Die Hard on a battleship" when released in 1992. Seagal handles the heroic duties with his usual wooden efficiency, but the movie's greatest assets are a punchy script and the scene-stealing performances of Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey. The two play leaders of a terrorist group who take over the venerable battleship USS Missouri during its final commissioned voyage. They're crazed psychotics who seize control of the ship's nuclear arsenal, but they don't know that Seagal--as the ship's cook, no less--is a former Navy hero, lurking in the shadows and waiting to spoil their nefarious scheme. Director Andrew Davis (The Fugitive) helms the action with skilful style, and as the cheesecake stripper who proves handy with a hand grenade, Playboy Playmate-turned-actress Erika Eleniak gives Seagal another reason to strut his macho stuff. Under Siege is hormonal hokum for gun-happy viewers, but as action movies go, this one's a definite guilty pleasure. --Jeff Shannon

5.0 out of 5 stars Single handedly destroying an army, 19 Mar 2005
If you like all-action movies you'll love this one. As with most action movies you have to suspend disbelief at least a little but, assuming that's a given, the movie is just great.

Seagal plays Casey Ryback - a cook (yup, that's right, a cook) who, by the way, is also a trained Navy SEAL trained in unarmed combat, explosives, weapons usage, tactical weapons etc etc etc. Due to some incident in his past he's working as a cook on board a US warship.

Then the bad guys arrive and hijack the ship. A curious plot, but there you go. Naturally they take out all officers ranking higher than the traitor who lets them in but conveniently don't know that Ryback has skills beyond pie-making.

So begins the carnage, as this now somewhat annoyed Navy SEAL decides to take back the ship. With a little help from Miss July 1989 and a few crew members he finds locked in a room somewhere he not only kills the entire army of bad guys but also manages to take out the Korean submarine that wanted to buy the nuclear missiles on board the ship.

If you don't like action movies, or you like to gripe about people who can still climb almost sheer surfaces despite having their arms torn by a grappling hook then don't bother with this one. If you like a bit of all-action quasi-comedy with disbelief well and truly suspended then just go and buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bloomin' Awesome!, 16 Jun 2000
By A Customer
The first time I saw Under Siege, I was ill and had to be taken to hospital half way through but thanks to Amazon (UK) and their realistic pices, it was possible for me to see it again, with only a two-day wait! Steven Seagal is by far my favourite martial-artist actor and Under Siege is my favourite movie. If you like this martial-arts extravaganza, then Under Siege should be a must-have in your video collection! Also, see Under Siege 2. --Lee Rollason

4.0 out of 5 stars If in doubt, get a cook (sorry, ex S.e.a.l) to save the day, 18 Nov 2008

Under Seige is another of those relentless action movies that both entertains and rolls a few eye balls. And with Steven Segal as the protagonist, its no wonder that you can't take this film seriously.

It's the usual story; Segal, just your average musclebound cook who rebels his officers, is the only man who can save the day after Tommy Lee Jones (a crazed ex servant in vietnam) takes over a large warship. Being trapped in a freezer while his companions were held hostage, he has the perfect opportunity to;

- Rip off his shirt minutes after escaping the freezer (with absolutely no intentions of flexing his body, of course...)
- Meet a fine young woman who as usual is a pain in the ****
- Teach this young woman how to survive gunfire and use handguns to deadly effect
- Rescue a group of officers
- Take out just under 30 bad guys
- Talk to the head of Security on a 'secure line' whilst in a gun fight
- Make a selection of neat bombs on the way

His well earned excuse for all this is that he's an ex s.e.a.l, and thus has the ability to generate bullet-proof skin access to magical unlimited machine gun ammo (he must replace his clip about twice in the whole movie). His attitude suggests that he is in more danger of cramping his hair style than break sweat, whilst his sidekicks are in danger of soiling themselves.

The end see's a particular crew member (whose name remains a secret, as to not spoil this 'thriller') lay in a coffin, with chisselled and quite laughable face of Segal staring into the camera. The only thing they forgot was;

"God bless America..."

A few anomalies occur throughout which proves how dumb some script writers/producers are. As a few examples, Why was he able to fire his gun in the sea water? How did he know the officers needed help through morse code in 1 and a half seconds? How did he know the telephone number of the Chief of Security? Where did he even find that mini satellite dish and phone? (to which he carried into a life raft without looking around).

This isn't one of Tommy Lee's best interestingly enough, but if you find the film in a charity shop, I highly suggest doing your bit for the old ladies behind the counter and hand over some dosh...
