Product Description

Product Description

This is the story of how Indigenous and Ethnic Peoples of the Commonwealth and British Empire helped Great Britain win WWII. Get Publishing has engaged MIDAS PR to promote Under One Flag. Until now, schools have taught World War II from a largely European perspective. As post-war Britain has a widely diverse ethnic population it is important that children (11 + years) of ethnic origin know that their grandparents and others played an important role in the defence of Great Britain. Each page of this striking book is packed with information that young people - or anyone else - will find both exciting and informative. The book is divided into six sections each featuring maps, sidebars, original photos, and more: Introduction: Preface by HRH Prince Philip; Australia & New Zealand; India & the Far East; Africa; The West Indies; Canada; and, Activities; Index; and Acknowledgements. This book was inspired by and written for the Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League who will receive a royalty from book sales.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Must for a Multi Cultural Society, 21 Sep 2010
By
This review is from: Under One Flag: How Indigenous and Ethnic Peoples of the Commonwealth and British Empire Helped Great Britain Win World War II (Hardcover)
In a Multi-Cultural society, the world wars are still seen as very White European, with a nod to the Gurkhas. This book shows the many other races and nationalities who fought under the Union Flag. Acts of great courage and valour are chronicled in this beautifully researched and laid out volume. Aimed at children and schools, it is still a valuable reference for all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent and informative read for both young and old!, 9 Nov 2009
This review is from: Under One Flag: How Indigenous and Ethnic Peoples of the Commonwealth and British Empire Helped Great Britain Win World War II (Hardcover)
Though the book is generally aimed at a younger audience, I (with my advancing years) found it a very informative and educational book on a subject I had not previously considered. It opens your eyes to the impact and involvement that many ethnic groups around the world had in helping Britain win World War II. Without their help, the world could well have been a very different place today. I would definitely recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful insight to British History, 5 Nov 2009

This review is from: Under One Flag: How Indigenous and Ethnic Peoples of the Commonwealth and British Empire Helped Great Britain Win World War II (Hardcover)
Although the book targets a young audience it is full of interesting insights and will entertain young and old alike. The book is a sober reminder that when it comes to ethnic diversity in the armed forces; many pages lay empty in the vast volumes of history. This inspiring and entertaining book is a playful reminder of a serious topic - that many ethnic groups have thanklessly dedicated much to the British Empire. Buy one, especially if you have kids!
