A life with many tricks up its sleeve, 11 Jun 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Under No Illusion (Hardcover)
Pint-sized Paul 'Ted' Daniels is undoubtedly one of the best magicians Britain - if not the world -has seen to date. From the pictures painted of him by the press in years past he always came across as someone with an ego on the scale of Ben Nevis. How refreshing it is to read this book and discover the in-depth man behind the showbiz facade. This master of illusion is none other than a real, down-to-earth human being. Laugh with him as he recounts his National Service days and his lust for a 'rather throaty' Chinese girl on a Hong Kong ferry and his encounter with a young Prince William at a kids' party; cry with him in his family heartache as his bouncy, lovable dad falls seriously ill, and one of his son's goes off the rails. Be extremely jealous as he snares and wins the hand of 'the delightful Debbie McGee'. If you are expecting him to break the magician's code and reveal how his illusions are done, forget it. Fiercely defensive of his art, he keeps his cards close to his chest. A superb, 'unputdownable' read showing how pure determination, the will to succeed - and a little magic - can propel you to the good life. Roll on volume two...

Just look at that face!, 23 Jan 2009
This review is from: Under No Illusion (Hardcover)
When I saw this book on Amazon, the first thing that struck me was Paul Daniels' earnest gaze practically oozing off the front cover.
His eyes caught mine and seemed to hold me in a trance like state.
The next thing I knew, I'd bought the book.
He really is magic!
Anyway, I have now read the book from cover to cover, and can heartily recommend it.
A terrific biopic of the greatest wizard since Merlin. A wizard who only uses his powers for good, never for evil (depending on your opinion of the Paul Daniels Show)
Although quite why it doesn't concentrate more on those few years where he presented the obscure daytime TV quiz show 'Wipeout' I shall never know.

If you only ever read one Autobiography in your life, then READ THIS ONE. Extremely well written, entertaining and interesting. I could not put the book down until I had read from cover to cover. This book has my highest possible recommendation.
