Book Description

25 May 2012
From one of the world’s leading fantasists comes an exhilarating new series that will thrill teen and adult readers alike. For the past six months, something has been happening to young people in Santa Feliz. Week after week, there’s news of another teen changing shape, transforming from human to wild animal and back again. The federal government has stepped in, running public service announcements calling for affected youth to turn themselves in for “orientation and training.” Josh Saunders has seen the news reports, but he is still unprepared when it happens to him. One minute he’s arguing with his mother’s boyfriend and the next, he is looming over the man, blood dripping from his claws—he has transformed into a mountain lion. When he switches back to his human body, he knows his life has changed forever. He has become a Wildling. Trusting only his best friends Des and Marina with his secret, Josh tries to return to regular living. But an encounter with Elzie, another Wildling, brings him unwanted attention from the authorities. And when an accidental betrayal reveals Josh’s secret, his carefully constructed cover is ripped apart, forcing his friends to intervene. They must grudgingly put their trust in others, including other Wildlings—and, most challenging, in each other— if they ever hope to save him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the next in the series! 21 Feb 2013

This tale is aimed at young adults, but is worth reading as an older one too! If you've never read any of de Lint's books, this is an interesting and enjoyable one, but do look out for his earlier works. I love his style, he often blends "Old World" magic and legend with "New World" ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful YA novel 15 Jun 2012

I am not going to lie. I didn't buy this book for my 8 year old. I bought it for me. I have read every single book by Charles de Lint that I have been able to get my hands on. He is a fantastic writer who carries me away with his stories. This book is no exception. Moving back and forth between the perspectives of different characters, I feel the angst of decisions made and how they play out, not perfectly, but in a way where things can move forward. I feel as if the characters are living in real life. Which is crazy because *spoiler* the characters in the book can transform from being human to animal and back again. But that is the gift of de Lint, you see yourself in his stories and you see the magic of the world through the magic of his stories. You win on both counts.

As I was reading the book I was paying attention to see if I would let my 8 year old daughter read it. The answer is no. There are some implied scenes that she is not ready for. But the good news is that when she is ready...I have a cabinet full of Charles de Lint books waiting for her to dive in.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good for young people who identify. 11 Oct 2012

Amazon pops up Charles de Lint for me because he is my favorite author.
I love Charles de Lint and identify with his urban legends and other stories.. this story is geared to those younger people who identify with humans being able to take mystical animal forms... I have read everything Mr. De Lind writes from the first time I read " The Riddle of the Wren" and I will continue to do so but this book is appreciated by my Granddaughter.... she is 19 and more his target audience... de Lint addicts will enjoy this and those who like Wolf man stories will also like it..... so I will purchase all the books and send them to granddaughter and she will enjoy them too ( after I have read them of course) .
