Although similar in style to her debut, it is clear that Lavigne has matured greatly as a singer and in some cases, songwriter. Lead single "Don't Tell Me" may not have the instant appeal of "Complicated" but has a greater depth and just gets better with every listen. Opening song "Take Me Away" sets the style for much of Under My Skin--sounding like Stiltskin's "Inside", it's a grandly over-produced power ballad by numbers. However, with 80s rock still on the rise and no-one new out there doing it nearly this well, it can only be a good thing. "He Wasn't" and "I Always Get What I Want" break the mould of the album and are high-energy pop-punk of the highest order, the latter an obvious standout--one would imagine it'll become a huge live favourite.
It may not be anything new, exciting or different but Under My Skin is so well written and executed it'll undoubtedly propel Avril Lavigne into a whole new stratosphere of rock stardom. --David Trueman
Review So, has the 19-year-old matured from the punk pixie doing time in the skate park and finding things just oh-so complicated? Well, the stock loaded guitar riffs, ambling piano melodies and brooding vocals suggest that Avril is desperate to ditch the mantle of youth and be taken seriously as an artiste.
But this is where she goes wrong. We enter the world of dating with Avril and what a gloomy, dire place it is. Too many tracks, such as 'Take Me Away' and 'My Happy Ending', pivot on the pain and despair of relationships going off the boil and, despite the stadium-rousing choruses, her whiney vocals and trite lyrics imply that madam is merely having a strop rather than wearing the hair shirt of Alanis Morrissette-style suffering.
'Don't Tell Me' turns all coy with the finger-wagging warning to her boyfriend, "Did I not tell you that I'm not like that girl, the one who gives it all away". So it's with relief that 'He Wasn't' leaps out with all the plucky cheek of old-skool Avril. A punchy chorus harks back to the kohl-lined rock chicks of yesteryear but possesses enough contemporary verve to set it up alongside the best of Busted. Similarly, the final track on the album, 'I Always Get What I Want' delivers a healthy slap in the face of authority, smacks heavily of Transvision Vamp and suggests that Avril isn't quite ready to grow up.
The combined writing efforts of band mate, Evan Taubenfeld, ex Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody and the watchful eye of Linkin Park producer Da Gilmore infuse the album with a nu-metal edge that might levitate this release from the ashes of forgettable rock but until Avril learns to take herself a little less seriously and manage a glimmer of a smile, she will continue to sound like a petulant teenager having a strop. --Annabel Leathes

Everyone should have this album, The extra 4 tracks show Avril at her best Raw Live Music, not tweaked about studio stuff such as what others churn out. It is a shame that this album seems to not have had any publicity. So this is just to say buy it while you can. Personally I Rate her right up with The Boss and Pat Benatar. The DVD extra is quite cool, you get to see Avril shopping in a road side supermarket in Ireland and sightseeing in London. (excellent value for Money especially from Amazon)

I haven't listened to this kind of electric guitar dominated rock/pop music for 15 years or more and I've got to say that Avril Lavigne is as good as anything I've heard in the past.Good lyrics, rythms, aggressive but subtle and, even beautiful singing, with the requisite attitude from hell all make Under My Skin something worth listening to again and again.
This is a cd that made me actually want to go and see a live performance. Great stuff!

I bought this album quite recently and after listening to it a few times, the songs really grew on me.
I'd obviously herd a few of avril's songs prior to buying the albums (mainly all the ones that had been released, the favourites), and had found them quite catchy and thought I might as well buy the album and see what it is like. I felt quite ashamed buying it actually, I think the stereotypical view of this is that it is aimed at teenage girls; I can't enlighten anyone on if it is or not, other than to say that I am extremely surprised at how catchy the songs are. Although I have herd a few songs from her "Let Go" album, i understand that she has been mildly criticised for her quite "basic" lyrics and I can say, in my opinion, she has evolved from that. Fair enough, there not lyrics that make you think and go wow, but they are defiantly an improvement. I also the selection of songs was excellent, and all fitted well together making it a great all round album. I myself am a big fan of pop punk and i am not quite sure what genre this comes under.... (Pop, Pop Punk, Pop Rock?) but I will say, what ever genre you like, I think you will find this album good. If you want a taste of this album, I would highly recommend... Take Me Away Don't Tell Nobodies Home Who Knows Freak Out***** If you enjoy one of these songs i would recommend getting it, you shouldn't be disappointed!
