3.0 out of 5 stars To begin at the beginning........, 7 Mar 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Under Milk Wood [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video version of the classic Dylan Thomas play for voices does not do the play complete justice. Richard Burton's first voice is one that will never been outperformed, a first rate performance. A majority of the performers didnt capture the essence needed for this beautiful collection of words. Its worth watching just to get a feel for this play, although live theatre/radio productions capture more of the feelings.

3.0 out of 5 stars Under Milk Wood, 24 Sep 2003
This review is from: Under Milk Wood [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I found the video rather dry in comparison with the taped edition which is rather sad. Richard Burton did his best of not speaking a word but the taped version brought the whole thing to life and left the story much to the imagination, something the video leaves nothing of. If you are buying this video I would recomend that you first buy the tape or CD and then make your own mind up if you would like the video. I feel the video lacks the imaginaton that so many of us have and leaves the veiwer with nothing.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Play for Voices, 28 Aug 2003
By
Mark Question (Hampshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Under Milk Wood [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The film has 'stars' galore, with the inevitable consequence that the characters they play are given a bigger emphasis than the author intended. A prime example is the long sex scene with Richard Burton in the shed. It is not even clear what tiny part of the original this was drawn from. Nor is the long sequence near the end of the film with all the villagers dancing down to the sea.
Under Milk Wood was written as a Play for Voices and relies on subtleties and nuances that have got lost in this visual interpretation. The director and writer have cut far too many of the descriptive words that make the play come alive, relying instead on clever and 'arty' visuals.
The original BBC Full Cast Radio Dramatisation is a much better buy than this film.
