Uli Jon Roth has never been a man to go for an easy listening approach. His work with the Scorpions, Electric Sun and solo have always seen him trying to push the edges and blur the lines between rock and classical music. However, he's never gone for the faintly ludicrous bombast approach, where the two genres are crudely welded together. Rather he has attempted to fuse styles in an effort to make something new.

This is a concept album which addresses the metaphysical state of the world from the perspective of Roth, and sees him looking back for inspiration to his Sky Of Avalon period, especially "Prologue To the Symphonic Legends". It's being billed as his return to rock, but really, it's nothing of the sort. Yes, it has some shorter tracks with easily accessible melodies. Yes, it has recognisable vocalists in the shape of ex Sahara vocalist, Liz Vandall and Mark Boals, who has sung for just about everyone including Ted Nugent, Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force and Royal Hunt. But this remains firmly the vision of Uli Jon Roth. And it is very good.

But be warned, this is music that demands active listening. It's not something to bung on while you do the washing up, especially on the album highlight, the three part, 11 minute song 'Land Of Dawn', where Uli and his guitar take you on an otherworldy journey. Although he is best known for his technical mastery of the guitar, Roth also manages to wring emotion out of his playing, something that lifts him beyond the mere mortals who appear from the California assembly line, all flash and no feeling. Something he demonstrates admirably on this album.

Bringing in classical, avante garde and classic rock flourishes, the album rises and falls, building to the crescendo of the 12 segments that form 'Tanz in Die Dammerung', where kitchen sinks are flung into the mix with great abandon. It's an always interesting ride, although not one for everyone.
