This is a top documentary. What a great insight into the thinking and the design behind many of the iconic album sleeves of the era. The two designers behind the sleeves Henry Diltz and Gary Burden were based in California so it's hardly surprising that it deals mostly with the L.A. / Laurel Canyon scene and as such you get the lowdown on the stories behind the albums born out of that bubble.
The two guys have some great stories to tell, as do various band members themselves and the way some of the sleeves came about either by accident or design is fantastic. The two guys have obviously lived a lot (and loved it) judging by these tales. Plus again there's the albums sleeves themselves, each with it's own story....for me the real eye opener was the cover of the 1st Eagles album (actually it's pretty funny when Gary Burden pulls up Henry Diltz for calling them "The Eagles" when it's just Eagles...something I pull people up about all the time!), I bought a copy way back in '75 and as a kid of 12 going on 13 always wondered why the inner gatefold was upside down, I thought I had a dodgy copy, especially when I got another version years later with the fold out what I thought was the right way up (but in the box set it's back to how it should be...i.e upside down....not that I noticed until watching this and it had me scrambling to check) - anyhoooooo you find out why, I sat there grinning like an idiot!
