Excellent solo career from Prairie Oyster Juno award winning frontman Russell DeCarle. For fans of Willie Nelson & The Mavericks 3 Jan. 2015
By Edward Rubinstein - Published on
Verified Purchase
Russell DeCarle is best known as the lead singer for country supergroup Prairie Oyster, however, his success was anything but overnight. It took Prairie Oyster over ten years to earn a record deal and nearly two decades for songs and albums to top the charts. It has taken DeCarle thirty-six years to finally release a solo album.

The new album, entitled Under The Big Big Sky, is a collection well-crafted songs reflecting DeCarle's love for jazz, blues, country, rockabilly and western swing music. Although his group Prairie Oyster was known for combining country and rock with those elements, DeCarle has taken a stripped-down approach utilizing acoustic instruments such as acoustic guitar, fiddle, coronet, accordion and horns. Like Prairie Oyster, DeCarle's new solo album will appeal to fans of The Mavericks, Raul Malo, Dean Martin, Roy Orbison, Lyle Lovett and Chris Isaak.

Under The Big Big Sky may be a departure from the full-band format used with Prairie Oyster, but the songs and clever production values are equally enjoyable. Russell DeCarle is a veteran in the world of country music. His group Prairie Oyster formed in Canada during the early 1970s, building a loyal following in North America through constant touring. lthough Prairie Oyster continue to perform and attract substantial crowds at clubs and dance halls in Canada and the United States, DeCarle is also touring in support of his solo project. The talented group of hand-picked musicians sound just as good on the album as they do in a live setting. The album features guest appearances from celebrity musicians including Keith Glass, David Wilcox, Amos Garrett and Blue Rodeo frontman Jim Cuddy. Demonstrating his songwriting abilities, DeCarle wrote nine of the eleven songs and is featured on vocals and rhythm guitar.

Playing numerous shows each year, DeCarle continues to tour and record with his solo band, which features himself on rhythm guitar along with lead guitarist Steve Briggs and accordeon player Denis Keldie.
