Product Description

Product Description

A well written story of a colonial officer's life in Africa, this is an insight into a colonial administrator's lifestyle. This book gives a portrait of African colonial society in a never-to-be-repeated episode in imperial history. Frank Bennett's life was changed forever by his spontaneous decision to reply to an advertisement for the Colonial Service. Knowing little about the Service and where he might be sent, Bennett accepted the opportunity to serve his country in the twilight of imperialism. By fate, Bennett found himself as a junior clerk in the Ministry of Finance in Northern Rhodesia (modern Zambia). His work in the 'Passages' office approving travel vouchers for his fellow colonial servants gave him the opportunity for plenty of adventures, travelling around East Africa from the majestic Victoria Falls to Mozambique. Written with verve and enjoyable humour, Under an African Sun is a gentle and humorous portrait of colonial government and the lifestyles of its officers.

About the Author

Frank Bennett worked in the Ministry of Finance in Northern Rhodesia between 1959 and 1961 and was later a financial planning and administration officer for the African Ministry of Education.
