This is a must have for any zombie horror fan. Because this is where it all started. 'Undead' is two reprinted novels in one volume, 'Night Of The Living Dead' and 'Return Of The Living Dead.' Written by screenwriter John Russo, Night Of The Living Dead wasn't novelized until about six years after the film was released. Every zombie fan knows the story from the film, only the book is even better. And it's better than many books from the plethora of zombie novels of the last decade. If 'World War Z' and 'Drop Dead Gorgeous' can average 5 star ratings, then this deserves an infinite line of stars. Don't get me wrong, said books are very good, just not AS good. This is bleak, gruesome, scary zombie horror that doesn't let up from the word go. Read this alone at night without any distractions, and feel the dread...of the undead.
The follow up, 'Return Of The Living Dead', is presented here in it's original conception, and is NOT the novelization of the comedy horror film of the same name, but continues in the same vein of bleak, stark horror as 'Night...'
Set not long after the first outbreak, a bus crashes in a small town, a new plague of undead is unleashed, and the locals are fighting for their lives again.
Other than The Walking Dead books, I also recommend the comic series/graphic novels of the prequel, Night Of The Living Dead - The Beginning, along with Escape Of The Living Dead, both co-written by John Russo and released by Avatar Press in full gory colour.
