'We are getting early reports of a train crash on the Brighton to London line...Emergency Services are on their way to the scene'. Holly knew that by staying with her he was putting himself at risk. But, as he held her in the darkness, she didn't want to let him go.

Holly's a mother with children, a husband she loves and a time-consuming job up in London. She copes, and life is good.

So when she is in a train accident on the London to Brighton line, Holly knows that it's just a small chapter in her life and nothing has changed. But Holly can't forget the younger man who comforted her in the chaos of the crash, and when she seems him again on her daily commute up to town, there's a flash of recognition between them. Is it embarrassment? Curiosity? Or is there something more? And what of Anne-Marie, another passenger who has survived. Just what is her story?

5.0 out of 5 stars a gentle pageturner 17 Feb 2012
Format:Hardcover
The fallout of a rail accident sets in train (pardon the pun!) the slow uncoupling of two marriages. This is a tale of buried panic and the denial of sorrow told gently and compellingly and with humour. Its pace and style reminded me of Anne Tyler, and like the best of Tyler it's the perfect read for a lazy weekend on the sofa in front of the fire. Shame on Hodder though for all the typos!

5.0 out of 5 stars Life affirming 10 May 2012
By Idler
Format:Hardcover
What a lovely book. I thoroughly enjoyed the wit and humanity of this novel, from a writer who keenly understands the complexities of relationships and possesses the gentle art of bringing them to life on the page. Her touching and insightful portrayal of a marriage in crisis is offset by a great eye for comic detail producing a novel which is a delight to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and fun 13 Mar 2012
Format:Hardcover
There's a real seam of humour running though this novel - including some brilliantly observed moments of family life. There's darkness too about having to grow up but it's not a dark novel. Ultimately, it has a real optimism about human nature - and its ability to be constant but also change - and some really good plot twists. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
