Product Description

After 10 years of going through the right channels to search for his son who has been listed as missing in action in Vietnam, Colonel Jason Rhodes (Gene Hackman) decides he must take matters into his own hands and go to Vietnam himself. He finds financial backing in the form of a Texas oil tycoon (Robert Stack) and the military help from five of his son's former Marine corps. After several weeks of gruelling training the group travels to Laos to begin the search and once again fight in Vietnam.

A real tear jerker, yet a very human feeling to the whole film. Every parent would surely be able to relate to the feelings portrayed by the situation acted very well by that fine actor, Gene Hackman. Good support acting from Danny Glover.

5.0 out of 5 stars great action 24 Dec 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD
The "Missing in Action" in Vietnam theme has been tackled by a number of films and various tv episodes.

This is one of the best, with well handled combat scenes, and a decent cast, though the actual action takes a while to get going.

The MIA issue is a controversial one still, and topics like this - the brutalities of the Soviet-Bloc controlled North Vietnamese invaders against the South Vietnamese people aren't often covered.

Whilst on the surface a conventional action film, it does try to move away from the false picture of US involvement in Vietnam painted by so many other movies.

Highly recommended.

Uncommon Valor was a Great Movie for its time. The portrayal of Gene Hackman playing a father and Marine who knew his son was alive and would risk his own life to get him home was just fantastic. This is the only film that I saw at the time that portrayed the POWs looking the way the North Vietnamese mistreated them. It also showed the since of honor most American Soldiers had in wanting to go back and finish a job they felt they were never allowed to correctly perform. This movie is credited with launching many other films with the theme of bringing home POWs that were believed still alive in Vietnam and secretly held prisoner.

The political message was also fitting to how the country was feeling at the time when all stories showing how the North Vietnamese really mistreated our POWs and showed people like Hanoi Jane to be liars when they said the North Vietnamese were so kind to our men. The truth was slowly coming out from refugees that the people who truly, "Raped and Pillaged" were from the People's Army from the North and not what the Hanoi Jane's were trying to push.
