5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, 18 Sep 2007
By TeensReadToo "Eat. Drink. Read. Be Merrier." (All Over the US & Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Uncle Montague is a bachelor who lives alone in a house that is packed with artifacts and collectibles. Edward loves to walk through the woods and visit Uncle Montague to hear his spine-tingling stories. Uncle Montague is reminded of each story as he picks up an artifact that is associated with it in his memory.

Edward's imagination is sent into a tailspin when he begins to wonder how Uncle Montague knows all of these frightening stories, and a darker side of Uncle Montague begins to emerge. Not all the stories have clear-cut endings, and Edward's fears become your own as you read these scary narratives.

From the Vicar's son who needed a hammer to mount his collection in the garden, to the Demon on the bench end, and Christina, who, to her horror, was granted three wishes, Chris Priestley has crafted a book that is impossible to put down, and definitely left me wanting more.

This book should appeal to reluctant readers with its fast-paced fear factor with a literary touch that just grabs you and won't let go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spellbinding tales, 8 Dec 2007
By kehs (Hertfordshire, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Uncle Montague lives alone in a large house that is situated behind some dark, dense woods. His nephew, Edgar, has to brave this scary walk to visit him, but makes the journey regularly, because he loves to listen to the stories his Uncle tells him. On the visit we hear about, the tales Edgar gets told grow more and more macabre with each one - and just who are the children he keeps getting glimpses of when his Uncle is supposed to live alone? Uncle Montague uses ancient artefacts that are dotted around his home to base his stories around. The final tale is the scariest of all, all the more so because it involves Edgar hearing some heart stopping truths about someone he least expected to be involved. The reader will pick up on Edgar's growing fear and will look forward with anticipation to each new tale.

All of the tales have a weirdly wonderful twist and will hold readers of all ages spellbound. A fantastic book that would make perfect Halloween or dark winter nights reading.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tales of tedium!, 3 Feb 2009
I found this book a complete chore, and only read it to the very end in the hope that something interesting would actually happen - it didn't!

Each short tale appears poorly thought out, not at all terrifying and left me feeling very unsatisfied with how each one ends, as in most instances I was left wondering whether a particular story had actually finished, or had merely stopped halfway through.

No real explanations are given as to a possible reason for why certain things occurred in the stories in the first place.

I can't see how any child could feel even remotely frightened by these weak stories. The illustrations are very well drawn though, and do more to give the book a sinister feel than the actual story itself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice and creepy!
This is a great book to dip into again and again. Each chapter can stand alone, which makes them perfect bedtime story material - if you don't get easily spooked that is!
