5.0 out of 5 stars Bathroom Reader 11 Mar 2011
DONT EVER BUY SECOND HAND COPIES OF THIS BOOK! It sits in the loo and is read each time I have to sit. Being a USA product there is not very much UK stuff and much we may not understand, but we an all learn. Surfice to say Harry Hill's (TV Burps) comment is included, "I knew I was going bald when it took longer to wash my face."

You could spend all day in the lav with this book if you so wanted. Or indeed any other room in your pad.

Packed full of trivia, myths and misconceptions, this is a book everyone should own.

You'll find yourself saying 'well blow me down with a feather, I never knew that.'

I cannot recommend any of the bathroom reader books enough.

Very entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uncle John's Latest and Greatest! 16 Oct 2010
By Michael OConnor - Published on
In some respects, the word "Heavy" in the title of this 23rd Edition of Uncle John's Bathroom Reader might refer to the hefty nature of the book. UNCLE JOHN'S HEAVY DUTY BATHROOM READER clocks in at 538 pages; that's almost two pounds of book! More importantly, it's stuffed full of the interesting, oddball, "didn't-know-that" info that Uncle John readers relish.

In terms of format, why mess with a winner? Edition 23 has the same mix of quick reads, two-three page articles, longer pieces and "extended" articles that have made the Bathroom Readers so successful.

In this case, Uncle John enlightens readers on the following:

famous food origins;
final concerts of famous performers;
a three-parter on smart birds;
funny church board messages;
185 uses for a pig;
bathroom-themed art;
famous gangster couples;
food dinosaurs ate;
people you thought were Americans but aren't;
a three-parter on Esperanto;
popular myths;
"Monopoly" game facts;
forgotten cartoon characters (think "Chilly Willy," etc.);
phobias of the rich and famous;
products that flopped;
fatal first flights;
weird fish stories;
good deeds done by celebs;
and - my favorite - a four-parter on explorers "who strode bravely into the face of the unknown and never came back"...and much, much more.

In short, you're sure to find something interesting in UNCLE JOHN'S HEAVY DUTY BATHROOM READER. So, a big thumb's-up to Edition 23!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another smash from Uncle John! 15 Dec 2010

What more can be said of a book that is in its 23rd edition and keeps on getting better! This series is so entertaining and delightful that even its great length, almost 500 pages, hardly seems a bother. The various stories are so entertaining they stagger the imagination. The anthrax story is very interesting as is the one dispelling various conspiracy theories.

If you enjoy being entertained and maybe learning something in the process than this book is for you!

This will keep you in the bathroom much longer than you probably want to stay. Full of totally useless information that you will find yourself repeating in conversations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uncle John just keeps flushing great information our way!! 5 Oct 2011

Wow! it's 2010 with this 23rd Edition in this fantastic series.Who would have thought it would continue for so long;and not only continue ,but keep getting better with each Edition?
This is a big one,with 544 pages no less.It has a mixture of just about everything.We continue to get the "bullets" at the bottom of every page.Short items, as well as longer and more detailed ones.In this edition,as usual,you're going to find the answer to all kinds of things that you've probably wondered about for years.Even if you are the type that never wonders about anything,and just takes life as it is presented to you,you're still going to read about all kinds of things that will not only inform you ,but amaze you as well.Then again,you may even find things here that really don't interest you,but that is not a problem,just turn a couple of pages,and you'll be faced with something that will.

Just to point out to someone who is "new" to these readers; the don't become dated.Any visit to your bookstore will give you a section with the latest as well as a shelf full of previously published Editions.I can't think of any other series of books that you can say that about.I have been a longtime fan of "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" and have a large collection of those books.Ripley's has been publishing them since I was a kid,continue to do so,and they keep getting better all the time.While there is a lot of similarity between Uncle John's and Ripley's;one great difference is that once published ,Ripley's soon disappear from the bookshelves---but not so with Uncle John'sReaders.
I have also remained faithful to some other things and it is disappointing when they disappear.My favorite comic strip for over 60 years has been Dick Tracy;but unfortunately it has been dropped from my daily newspaper.Also;Ripley's daily Cartoon has disappeared several years ago.Fortunately,they still come to to me every day via e-mail,and free no less. No wonder that people are questioning the survivability of newspapers and that many no longer subscribe to or read them. I don't know if Uncle John is available in a similar manner;but it would be great if it were.How about it,Uncle John?It would be a great treat to your fans to have something come to them daily.I'll be keeping an eye open for a note in one of the future Readers,that you have picked up on my fantastic proposal and that it is now available.
