Product Description

Product Description

Alfred Nestor - born a German child, now a British man - son of a high-ranking SS officer writes with an intense directness in his book Uncle Hitler. Without claiming the usual badly done to victimship or literary elaboration, Alfred unveils an extraordinarily moving and important account of growing up in Nazi Germany while living right next door to Adolf Hitler and his eventual evacuation under special licence as the first post World War Two German child to Ayr in Scotland, and then on to England where he now lives. Whilst literally living right next door to Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun, Hitler's long time companion; Alfred is innocently unaware of whom the true identities of 'Uncle' Hitler and 'Aunty' Eva really are. With an intense directness, Alfred brings the whole period alive when he paints a powerfully personal and vivid picture of the destructive character of conflict. This remarkable story has many twists and turns, culminating in him being reunited with the father he thought was dead for 53 years! Although there is no fake outpouring of emotions, you simply cannot help but feel close to the sentiments of Alfred as he is innocently caught in the ravages of a war that brings his childhood world crumbling down. As war approached an end in 1945, Soviet reprisals against German civilians were full of raw emotion when the advancing Red Army went on a killing spree; resulting in the spontaneous flight and evacuation of Germans. Trying to stay ahead of the advancing Red Army, Alfred and his mother escaped death by mere seconds. A warm and frank wartime memoir to the current times, this is his story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uncle Adolph a FANTASTIC read., 31 July 2011
This review is from: Uncle Hitler: A Child's Traumatic Journey Through Nazi Hell to the Safety of Britain (Paperback)
Both my Father and I could NOT put this book down! It is such an easy read. Seen through the eyes of a child who's innocence shines through on every page. I think it should be used in schools due to the style of writing, it would be far easier to relate to than other History documented books.
It puts accross that in ALL war and conflict, there are no real winners, just victims.
WELL DONE Mr A Nestor. I urge EVERYONE to order a copy or ask your local library/school to stock this book. It has horrors, saddness, great happiness, laughter and a STRONG message of understanding for young and old.

This review is from: Uncle Hitler: A Child's Traumatic Journey Through Nazi Hell to the Safety of Britain (Paperback)
An author is not obligated to serve anybody except himself, and yet books do exist that serve society. Uncle Hitler serves both. Mr. Nestor obviously needed to reconcile his inborn humanity with a mad world. To our good fortune his effort also guides us through the evil and the good that people harbor, illustrated by a very personal story woven into a clear, crisp synopsis of why and how World War II happened. The impact that the war had on many victims is unimaginable, but Mr. Nestor gives us a perspective that lets us view a piece of the horror and not cringe away. We need to know these things.

The varied writing style captures each step of the story, evolving from the short, sharp, visual descriptions of a child's view, to the mature, thoughtful revelations of meeting his long estranged father.

Read this book for entertainment, or read it for elucidation, but read it.

This review is from: Uncle Hitler: A Child's Traumatic Journey Through Nazi Hell to the Safety of Britain (Paperback)
This is an excellent story and well worth reading. IMHO it should be compulsory reading in schools in modern history and humanities. Very well written.
This book deserves to be available on Kindle.
