5.0 out of 5 stars SAD; inspiring; UPLIFTING; painful...... 17 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
PLEASE READ THIS!!!! Superbly written more than 150 years ago......and by a forward thinking woman;I read it first about 50 years ago & it opened my eyes as a youngster to how black people were regarded all those years ago. My world was a different place in the 1950s, we hadn't heard of multiculturalism.......there were few black faces in my town......nevertheless I was moved & touched by this book then; now, as an old woman, I am even more touched by my recent re-reading..... the fact that America now has a black president is testament to those in this book and like minded supporters & writers & other influential thinkers in America during the period in which this book is written.. PLEASE READ THIS!!!!

Clear evidence from the text as to why this had such an impact on American sensibility about 'slavery' - a very powerful read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Necessary reading 4 Aug 2013
By Snapper
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Everyone should read this book, but also remember that at this time in history children were working in the mines in England and being used as chimney sweeps. After reading Harriet Beecher Stowe, one should read Charles Dickens.

I found it difficult to begin with to understand the dialogue spoken by the negro characters, but got to grips with it after a while. Very moving.

A gripping tale that predates Twelve Years a Slave. Yes, there are some dated passages, but the main story is based on real situations and is horribly credible. Read more
